13. Special Numbers

It is sometimes possible to tell which "toll switch" (ie. the centre that
services your long distance calling) is. Try dialing 1 416 970 5111 (should
be toll-free) and check if you get a recording back.

Other tests are available by dialing numbers of the form 1 416 970 X111
where the X gets replaced by a digit:

1 416 970 0111 or - should get a tone test
1 416 970 2111

1 416 970 1111 or - these likely get live telephone-type people; you shouldn't
1 416 970 4111 bother them or they might get the Bell Police after you;
The '1111' number will get someone who answers "Toronto"
and is presumably the person working the toll switch.

1 416 970 3111 - the sound of silence... nothing comes across here

1 416 970 5111 - toll switch identification

1 416 970 6111 - "1+ coin" announcement for the toll switch
(not necessarily active, or easy to find in some cases)

1 416 970 7111 - "0+ domestic" announcement for the toll switch
(not necessarily active, or easy to find in some cases)

1 416 970 8111 - probably not in service; perhaps something is hiding
elsewhere in the 8xxx series of last four digits

1 416 970 9111 - "inwats" (800) test announcement

Note that the important feature of the last four digits is the 'X' digit...
other digits can be tried, and often get the same results. For instance,
416 970 5432 might work the same as 1 416 970 5111. It is possible that
some of these tests may be hidden in other, specific numbers on the 970
exchange: only the right number will give the right announcement or feature.

Note also that not all features may work on all exchanges at all times.
