The privately owned payphone is a relatively new beast to appear in public, some might say it'san excuse to rape the public in exorbitant long distance charges and 5 minute 'local' calls. Teeaeafew ways to fight back against these incidious devices.

Some ideas include, using the phone as a diverter. Recently I visited a GTE style POP at a chaistation near Detroit, by dialing the old standard 0+npa+7digits as you would for a calling cardIwscnected to a MCI ABC prompt, ka-bong! Then after a few seconds, an MCI operator, if at this oit ousudely go deaf, the MCI operator will kindly, "Thank you for using MCI" and disconnect, jst ikewit an800diverter things click and 5-10 seconds later you have the dial tone back, which llow youto cll aythig the phone line hooked up to the pay phone will allow you to. This one alowed ny cals arund te US,and international, but not directly, you had to dial a carrier access ode tooverrie MCI,being his phnes primary LD carrier, so 10XXX+011+International number gives yu what ou want Whathappenswhen th MCI operator hangs up is not unlike what happens when you ae talkin at home and theperson yu are taking to hangs up the phone on his/her end, if you have n electroic switch and the lder softare you gt your dialtone back, if not and you get an error essage youare outta uck. Condtions varyfrom exchage to exchange sometimes in the same town! Ceck all posibilities! It's reallyworth it!

In case you are wondering how you can tell a privately owned phone from a Telco phone, they arey simple to identify. The usual giveaways are different placards at the top and bottom, IE. idniyn ho owns and operates the phone, in the above case, the gas stations parent company. Otherclesinlue,a higher than normal fee for LD calls and for local calls, IE. most phones here are 2 cets, som prvatly owned phones are 25. Also a fake dial tone is another giveaway, that is if i souds smewht diferet and you can here it dialing another number faintly after you dial a numbe. Soe phoes ar remakablyclose to a real tone though. One of the easiest ways though was lookig at te phon sign ver th outdor phones, the ones that are a Bell operating company usually say o, the nes tha are prvately wned usally just say phone, but this is not always the case, but ithelps ifyou are riving aong and on't wan to stop at every phone you see. Also the phone booth sually isdifferent often had plastic as opposd to aluminum or stainless steel, and often these hones are ctually lihted at niht, try tofind a Bel or GTE phone that is!

More fun can be had if your local Telco offers instant service turn-ons, think of all the fun yld have if you favorite POP suddenly had call forwarding? Simply call the telco computer and odrtesrvice to the number off the phone. Then using the above methods set call forwarding and cllth pon fom the privacy of your own home and chat with the sysop on that great board in German yo cold eve aford to call before, even simple things like using it to call someone you'd rathe notcalldiret, geat ay to defeat caller ID, but of course so is a regular payphone.

Also you could always find the phone line that runs to the POP, and splice into it with your own phone", since this is a normal, business line and not a coin-op line there are no, deposit 20 et eodings here, just experiment and see what restrictions are placed on the line.

Making collect calls, this applies to SOME Bell and GTE phones as well. Some alternative LD ca like Americall Business LD Carrier Access code 10006, and One Call Communications 10226 use atmtdoerator services to bill some calls. Some privately owned payphones, and even some newer Bllan GE ayhones are not on the national list of payphones or other phones that are not supposedto ccet o reeiv collect calls. If you have a friend in another city you could have him/her seach fr suh a honein tere area and then call them collect at a pre-arranged time from another payhone hat mght aso acept "ollect calls". Some privately owned phones, especially the newer oneshave avoice nnouncment sating hat "Attention do not accept any collect calls to this phone", sosome ties thatcan be caveat but oter times operators will ignore this entirely, it's worth a ty at leat. Alsoany stanard AT&T MCI, orSprint operator will also place collect calls for you oviously, ut automaed operatrs are moe elegent and more likely to screw up billing for the compaies, not t mention tey charge LOT more.

Still yet another way, and I think the most convenient, is to find a bank of payphones that wilpt collect calls to themselves. The next step is to call an alternative LD carrier such as OneCl omnications 10226+0 for the operator menu, then select 3rd party billing, you should get a lveopraorfo this, make up some bs number that your calling from if she should ask, then give herthenumer ou antto call domestic or international. Next the kicker is you give her the number yu wat tobillit t as ne of the payphones in the bank that you are standing in, what happens nextis sh willput yu on old, nd the payphone you gave her will start to ring, simply pick it up andacceptthe chrges, ou wil then e connected to the number that you originally wanted to call, a lttle elborate, but it orks. t was knd of fun trying it at another gas station, this time with 2POP's geting theone to rng and rcing acrss the parking lot to answer it, and then racing back aross to te origina phone asthe call ent throuh.

Places to look for privately owned phones include, obviously gas stations, restaurants, party s and discount stores, some mom and pop places also seem to like these type of things, I believeAwyi ne of the marketers that sell these things in case you want one of your own, ask your Amwa rp orsoe nfo.

Some final notes, there are many different POP models some look like Bell clones, some GTE, somean electronic display, others look like cheap european style desk phones, only indoor areas lik etuats would have these though. Also most of you know that all switching systems operate a litl dffretl nowadays, some give you the dial tone back after someone such as the MCI operator hags p, omeunfrtuately don't so obviously, the first technique will not work on all phones. Alsosomeof te neer mdelsreset when they receive the hangup tone, and most importantly the dial toneback,to ge aroud thelatte have your finger ready on 1, and the instant you hear the dial tone cme bac pounc on it You ave tosquelch it before the phone resets, if you do you have defeated tis annoing feaure, an can cal out a specified. A word of advise if you are going to make a habt of makng thesetype of alls, DO'T dial hem directly, use some oddball carrier, that way the owers of th phone ma not get illed forthese cals for months if at all, and they will probably disute a billfor an altrnate carrer if theydo get one Try to move around to different phones also have a menal list in ind when gong out and pread the clls around, also calling at different ties of the da, above all,try to make ourself incospicuous as ossible, you don't want people to rmember you! f it feels ba, don't do it or leave thearea!

Some of these phones also answer with a modem like carrier when they are called, possibly you coprogram them or reset them from remote, experiment and see, I would appreciate anyone's comment nti. Thanks for taking the time to read this and I hope you'll enjoy the next file from us, ifthreevr s ne. Who knows?
