The Crimson Box is very simple device that will allow you to put someone on hold or make your phone busy with a large amount of ease. You flip a switch and the person can't hear you talking. Flip it back and everything is peachy.

Needed Materials

(1) 100 ohm or less resistor
(1) SPDT toggle switch, On-On
(3) feet of good wire
Wire cutters
Solder and soldering iron

Construction

I'm going to refer to the switch poles as 1, 2, and 3. Flip the switch one way and you have completed the circuit between poles 1 and 2. Flip it the other way and you've completed the circuit between poles 2 and 3.

  1. Find the red and green wires (ring and tip) in the phone.
  2. Cut the green wire and strip off 1/4" of insulation from each end.
  3. Solder one end of the green wire to the pole #2 on the switch.
  4. Solder the other end of the green wire to the pole #3 on the switch.
  5. Solder one end of the resistor to pole #1 on the switch.
  6. Cut the red wire and strip off 1/4" of insulation from each end.
  7. Solder both ends of the red wire to the other end of the resistor.

With the switch connecting poles 1 and 2, you've shorted the red and green wires across the resistor, which will make the phone busy if someone tries to call or will put a person on hold if you're already talking to them. With the switch crossing poles 2 and 3 you've just completed the path for the green wire, and the phone will operate normally.
