CONCERNING
THE BOOK OF THE LAW
Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law.
The Book of the Law (Liber Legis) was dictated in Cairo, between
noon and 1 p.m. on three successive days, April 8th, 9th and 10th
in the sacred year of Our Lord Horus 1904 e.v.. The Author of the
book was a praeterhuman intelligence named "Aiwass" who claimed
to be the minister of the Child Horus, also called Hoor-Paar-
Kraat in the Egyptian tongue. The scribe of the book recognized
Aiwass as his Holy Guardian Angel. The scribe of the book was
none other than the Magician Aleister Crowley who, with Hadit
burning in his heart, wrote down the three chapters of the Book
of the Law, as dictated to him by his Holy Guardian Angel.
Crowley later came to identify Aiwass as one of the Secret Chiefs
of the Third Order of the A.'. A.'., a discarnate entity of
superhuman intelligence and power.
It was not until some years later, after the fulfillment of some
prophetic statements made in The Book of the Law, and his
attainment of the grade of Magister Templi, that Crowley began to
truly understand and accept the message and meaning of The Book
of the Law. This is most important to understand, as The Book of
the Law contains many recondite and disguised truths. In fact,
Crowley never fully understood all of the messages contained in
The Book of the Law, and it can only be assumed that some of the
events have not yet come to pass.
The principal message of The Book of the Law is the Law of
Thelema: "Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law. Love
is the law, love under will." (AL I:40,57) This is the One Law
and simple Code of Conduct for the New Race of the New Aeon of
Horus. It is a magical formula for the essential realization and
attainment of absolute Liberty. By its application we can come to
understand our own true natures, and to express in our lives the
creative Will of our beings, and make joy and victory our lot.
The Book of the Law is divided into three chapters. Each Chapter
is a message from three different Archetypal Gods, demonstrating
the nature of the god in accordance with the doctrine of the New
Aeon. These messages constitute the principles and formulas of
the New Aeon of Horus.
Chapter I -- Nuit. Nuit is the Goddess of Infinite Space, and
the Infinite Stars thereof. She is the totality of infinite
possibility and infinite experience. She brings to mankind the
message of Love, Joy and Ecstasy, and proclaims to all the
beginning of the New Aeon of the Law of Thelema. She explains the
means of doing one's Will in freedom, and the joys thereof.
Chapter II -- Hadit. Hadit is the centre of all experience. He
is the central point moving through and uniting with Infinite
Space. His is the message of Life and Death. He reveals the
dynamic principles by which to attain the Great Work, and the
concepts by which the Law of Thelema is applied to one's
initiation.
Chapter III -- Ra-Hoor-Khuit. Ra-Hoor-Khuit is the God of War
and of Vengeance. He is the Crowned and Conquering Child of Nuit
and Hadit. He proclaims the message of Force and Fire by which
mankind will embrace the Law of Thelema and the New Aeon. He
tells of the ordeals of initiation that shall be undergone by the
initiates, and the means of surmounting those essential ordeals.
The magical formula of The Book of the Law is not based on an
absolute truth but on one that is relative to the Spirit of the
times. The book makes no claim to settle the problems of humanity
once and for all; it merely indicates a particular stage in the
course of evolution. This particular stage is called the New
Aeon of Horus, which commenced in March, 1904 e.v. and will last
for two thousand years. Horus, the Lord of the New Aeon, is the
Child of Osiris and Isis. The Old Aeon was that of the Father
Osiris, and the Aeon before that was that of the Mother Isis.
Horus, their Child, partakes of the elements of both his Father
and Mother. He is bisexual, a combination of male and female.
Although the entirety of The Book of the Law is important, there
are particular verses worthy of special examination and
application, for our own good comfort and wisdom.
"Every man and every woman is a star." (AL,I:3) Everyone is a
unique expression of the Infinite, as every star is an expression
of the Universe, each with it's own unique orbit to pursue in the
grand scheme of cosmic evolution. Every man and every woman has
an orbit which they are destined to discover and follow, to
achieve harmony in accordance with the One Will of the Universe.
"So with thy all; thou hast no right but to do thy will. Do that,
and no other shall say nay." (AL,I:42-43) When you have obtained
the knowledge of your True Will, you must perform it in every
aspect of your life. Every thought, word and deed must be solely
dedicated to the performance of your True Will; in other words,
your whole life must become a sacrament unto Nuit. When you are
doing this, indeed no other will say nay, since you will
interpret all things in that essential light.
"There are four gates to one palace." (AL,I:51) The four gates
are the four Glories of the Law, that is, Light, Life, Love and
Liberty. In the system of the New Order, these are attained by
the application of the Four Powers of the Sphinx which give one
magical power over the Four Elements. The Palace is the invisible
centre of every Star; that is, the secret Sanctuary within. Only
through mastery of the Four Elements and the attainment of
Adepthood can the Magician attain to the Inner Palace. This, of
course, is one of the principal objects of Our Holy Order.
"Who calls us Thelemites will do no wrong if he look but close
into the word. For there are therein Three Grades, the Hermit,
and the Lover, and the man of Earth. Do what thou wilt shall be
the whole of the Law." (AL,I:40.) In the system and structure of
the Thelemic Order of the Golden Dawn there are three principal
grades of attainment as stated in the above verse. The Hermit
Grade is composed of Ipsissimus, Magus and Magister Templi; the
Lovers Grade is composed of Adeptus Exemptus, Adeptus Major and
Adeptus Minor; the Man of Earth Grade is composed of Dominus
Liminus, Zelator and Neophyte. These represent Three Triads. In
each Triad there is concentrated a particular formula related to
the dynamic magical principles of the Book of the Law.
"Abrogate are all rituals, all ordeals, all words and signs. Ra-
Hoor-Khuit hath taken his seat in the East at the Equinox of the
Gods." (AL,I:49.) This is a declaration of the New Order of the
Universe. Ra-Hoor-Khuit is now the principal God, and the Law of
Thelema is now the Sole Rule of conduct. All old rituals,
ordeals, words and signs shall be abolished, and new ones shall
take their place. "Behold! the rituals of the old time are
black. Let the evil ones be cast away; let the good ones be
purged by the prophet! Then shall this Knowledge go aright."
(AL,II:5.) So it has been done, and so it is now being done in
the New Order of the Golden Dawn.
"I am the warrior Lord of the Forties: the Eighties cower before
me, and are abased." (AL,III:46) It is interesting to note here
that the Nuclear Age started in the forty-first year of this New
Aeon of Horus. It is now the eighty-sixth year and mankind is on
the verge of making Nuclear War on earth. But there may be a
different or further meaning applicable to this verse, concerning
the New Golden Dawn, which commenced during the eighty-sixth year
of this New Aeon of Horus, at a time that Dr. Israel Regardie
predicted something momentous was to occur in the course of
history, suggesting what Crowley referred to as "a new current
... [to] revive the shattered thought of mankind."
Love is the law, love under will.
