Principles and beliefs of Wicca

Principles and Beliefs of Wicca

by Michael Slouber

1. We believe there is one divine power that resides in every living thing.
This power has been labeled as the Goddess and the God. We belive in no evil
being or devil.

2. We believe in karma, or known to witches as "The Law of Three" which
states- anything you do, positive or negative, will return to you threefold.

3. We believe in the practice of magic for self-help and self-mastery. This
magic or power that we work with is simply the energy that exists in nature,
or is an exertion of personal Willpower.

4. We believe in and strive for self-mastery through meditation. An Adept
is one who has conplete control over his/her reality. This is a very philo-
sophical oriented religion, and we generally believe in defying the laws of
physics or general reality! (please note that it takes a lifetime of study
to be able to physically cause change...i.e. change the weather).

5. We believe in reincarnation. It is said that when you die, your go back
into the womb (of the goddess) and are reborn. As with all Wiccan beliefs,
you may choose to believe what you want. I personally do not believe in
reincarnation, or the goddess and god in a consious sense. I won't say that
it is false, because I simply have no proof.

6. We are very open minded in that we will never say someone else's religion
is wrong. I believe that there is no universal right and wrong, it all
depends on the personal. A world famous Mage (magician) Aleister Crowley, who
lived around the turn of the century, based his religion and life in one law:
Do what thou wilt. He said that you should do WHATEVER you wish as long as
you do not interfere with someone else's dharma (way of life). Most Wiccans
will take things from every religion and culture, and not limit his or herself
to one path. I myself am a mixture of eastern Buddhist philosophy, Native
American Indian nature beliefs, and pagan Europe's magical beliefs. Wicca
does not say that I cannot believe in Jesus if I choose to do so.

7. We generally believe in the Earth as a symbol of the divine mother and
treat her like so. We believe in peace on earth and good will towards men
(and women!). We believe all earth is sacred.

8. I believe that Wicca is a woman dominated religion for it's belief in the
goddess. There are sections of Wicca that only allow women which I think is
sexist, but they say they express themselves better without men to worry
about.

9. The word "Wicca" comes from the latin word "weik" which literally means
"wise one". "Wicca" is the real word for "witch" and is used interchangedly.
Some say that Wicca is as old as 6000 years and came from pre-christian
Ireland and Europe.

10. We hold ceremonies and rituals marking the full moons and the natural
events such as the winter and summer solstices. These are symbolic days of
power in practically every religion. Yule is Dec. 23, and Christmas is the
25th. Halloween (Samhain in Wicca) is Oct. 31, All Saints Day is Nov. 1.
May 1st is Beltane, and Cinco de Mayo is celebrated in spanish speaking
counrties only a few days later. All I am saying is that our religion is
much more similar to Christianity than you might think.

11. We study anything and everything having to do with the philosophical,
metaphysical, and the New Age. Alot of female witches study Astrology,
Numerology, and Palmistry. The males are GENERALLY more interested in the
Ceremonial Magic...like working with ghosts and astral beings. We are the
flower children of the sixties reborn to spread peace and love!!

12. All of these principles have entire books written on them, and I have
barely summarized them. All information above is a short summary of the
thousands and thousands of pages I have read from mnay different books.
Wicca is one of the fastest growing religions in the world. If you watch
TV, you will notice more and more shows on Wicca. Picket Fences had an
episode on it. The News has stories now and then. On Halloween, there was
a show called "Witches: Are they real?" which went into the religion of Wicca.
I think you will see much more in the future. Wicca is not a threat to
Christianity, it is merely another way of looking at life. As we Witches say,
Merry meet, merry part, and merry meet again! Blessed be!
