The Book of Fools
THE BOOK OF FOOLS
I.
THEY are the ones who walk like sheep of the flock, who walk
the streets unmindfully, uniformly the same. THEY are the ones who
conform, who follow the order with no thoughts of THEIR own. THEY
are trained to think with THEIR mind inside a box.
And when one joins THEM, he has no mind of his own. Indeed,
for all THEIR masses, THEY have only one mind to go around. Who
knows what horrible fate has befallen all the wasted minds?
THEY can only see one thing at a time and it is rare indeed
when THEY stray from THEIR known path. THEY speak to each other in
a babble painful for the wise to hear. Those who do not follow
THEIR single-minded rituals are branded as heretics and madmen.
Those who are ignorant of THEIR unspoken rules are treated as
outcasts.
That outside of THEIR limited vision, THEY view as unworthy,
and that outside THEIR rules of conduct, THEY view as obscene. If
only THEY knew THEIR ignorance, if only THEY saw THEIR foolishness,
the world would be a cauldron of knowledge, its cities, temples of
art.
But alas, THEY cannot hear our cries. For THEIR ignorance
deafens THEIR minds.
THEIR numbers are growing as blankness falls across the minds
of this land. I dread to see the day when knowledge is unknown and
ignorance prevails! Those who join have no vision of their own.
They have no confidence in their own ideas, so they seek approval
from THEM, the fools. It is a boredom, a lack of purpose that
drives them away from their selfhood. Alas, they never learned
that some things need no reason.
So ask not why; ask why not. Guard your mind and your ideas.
Never let your mind recede into those colorless crevices of
blankness. You may find yourself at times without a vision or a
dream, but never forget these words. Rest well, and you will find
yourself in your dreams. Gaze at the moon, that eternal source of
lunacy. In time your vision will return.
So remember next time THEY plague you on the streets, in your
home, at your places of gathering. Do not accept the gift of
ignorance. If you close your mind THEY will build THEIR walls
around it. But if you keep your mind open, THEY will pass right
through it.
THEY can not take your mind if you do not let THEM. THEY are
fools! THEY are all fools! Mindless fools to the very last one!
II.
And if THEY come to rule the world, a sick uniformity will
lurk over it. Music will be unvarying, and art will die
completely. Poems and verses will be lost. The great sciences
will cease to exist, and mathematics will go unnoticed.
Even the soldiers shall desert their ranks, and the armies
shall disband themselves. The governments shall cease to govern,
and the workers shall cease to work.
And the people will cease to read, and the teachers will cease
to teach. The scholars will leave their studies and the places of
learning will be deserted.
And the people shall wander through the streets unmindfully,
knowing not where they are or have been. They will blindly rob and
steal, and there will be no law. The rich and poor will be the
same and the people will be as animals.
And the cities shall fall and a great blankness shall bury the
land. The people will take to the hills and valleys and wander
like animals. They will have no possessions and no beliefs.
And they will never think to the days ahead, and time will go
unrecorded.
And the river of time shall cease to flow, and events shall
cease to follow. Cause will not warrant effect, and logic will be
utterly lost.
And the sun shall rest on the horizon and the world will be
cloaked in eternal twilight. The mountains shall fall, and the
valleys shall rise. The lakes shall empty to the sea. The ices
shall melt, and the deserts shall become marshes. The lands shall
fall, and the seas shall rise, and a great many habitations will be
lost.
And the gates of the underworld will open, and the dead will
awaken. But the great evils that lie below will not rise unless it
be their time.
Life and death shall be one and the same, and the world will
be grey, neither living nor dead. It will be an age neither dark
nor light that nothing good nor evil can come of.
And there will be no sorrow, nor joy, nor anger. It will be
a bleak world with no hopes and no dreams.
But if this fate may befall the world, so be it! For the
children of a world so grey shall rise up and destroy it! They
shall defy its uniformity and refuse to conform to its bleakness.
They shall madly deny their order of their parents, and chaos will
once again walk on this Earth.
And the dead shall once again rest and the gates of the
underworld close. The mountains shall rise, and the valleys shall
fall. The rivers shall flow and the lakes shall fill. The seas
will recede and the glaciers will freeze.
And time will once again be recorded and the sun shall once
again rise and set.
And the people will cease to live as animals, and the soldiers
will fight, and the preachers will preach. The fire of knowledge
will be rekindled, and the teachers will once again teach.
And in time the sciences and mathematics will be rediscovered,
and the verses shall be read once more. The arts will be great and
varied and form, and the streets will be uplifted by music.
And in time even THEY shall return and capture the people's
minds. However, THEY shall not rule again in the lifetime of those
who rebuilt the world.
But THEY can never die completely until only a single soul
walks on this Earth. So it is told!
