Life, the most wonderful thing in existence, yet plagued with problems. Famine, disease, pain, why were these created? Is it possible they weren’t created? Long is our list of made up beings, Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, all of these creations have two things in common. One, in reward for good behavior we are given gifts. What is heaven but the greatest gift of all? Two, they are only believed in by children. “But we are not children” you say. Yet doesn’t the bible refer to humans as “children of the lord” or a “flock” (referring to sheep which are easily controlled and lack will power.) So, is not God our greatest creation of all giving us the best gift of all? Why then do we continue to believe in this creation? We claim to no longer be children, but our beliefs hint otherwise. Why do we keep ourselves shackled down? Why are we killing, becoming bigots, and harming others in the name of God? If I did these acts in the name of Santa Claus would it be any less ridiculous?

Thus we come to another uncomfortable point. God is a drug. Like any other drug, God is addictive, it makes you feel good, and anyone, pointing out the harsh truth is ignored. Why do I not take drugs you ask? They weaken the mind, and religion like all other drugs does weaken the mind. Those who taste it are seduced by it. Wouldn’t it be so easy if God would take care of everything? The mind whispers such thoughts to those that succumb, and no longer are able to see things in the harsh light of logic. Their reasoning begins to waver, they search for God’s hand in everything, and natural laws are ignored. That is why I do not follow a religion, I prefer my mind unclouded, and unfettered with meaningless laws that a religion, devoted to forges in the fires of hypocrisy, shackles you with.

God is what kept the dark ages dark. In fear of god, people did not want social reforms. They kept themselves in ignorance. There was widespread disease and squalor. People were brainwashed to believe that the existing social evils of the time were in accordance with god’s will. Because of that, they did nothing to help the people or improve conditions because of the fear of offending god. Even today that still goes on. Children are sent to Sunday school and catholic school where they are taught that god will take care of everything, and not to worry, just to pray. They are not taught about the frustration and sheer reality of reality. The smarter ones will figure it out that they need to watch out for themselves after they realize that god has not helped that person in the car crash or saved the person who was murdered the other night. They realize that there is nothing helping those people. They realize that god is letting his children die.

According to G. Vincent Runyon, a former Catholic Priest who spent 12 years in the pulpit, when he made acquaintances with some atheists and realized that they were nicer and more considerate than any Christian he knew, he became atheist after he spent years researching Christianity and realized how impossible the entire Christian idea is. He realized that it held absolutely no logic. He also came out and said this: “The church teaches behavior by the method of fear. Children are taught that they are being watched and that they will be rewarded or punished in the hereafter according to their actions. All this is done by an invisible and unseen god. Children are taught of hell and heaven and of devils and angels and miracles. For such teachings there is no basis in fact. It leads to superstition. It makes some children neurotic and warps their personalities. It is an antiquated ineffective technique. The idea of piety is repulsive to normal young minds. Boys do not want to be thought of as angels. It makes them ashamed to be good.”

Up until recently the Catholic Church has been against every new idea. They disagree with almost every new scientific discovery and have blamed most diseases on sin. They disagreed when they found out that the earth is not the center of the universe. Even recently, the pope has said that priests cannot have wives or sexual relations. The church disagrees with painless childbirth, birth control, and abortion. There is almost an endless list of things that the Catholic Church frowns upon and even completely bans. The Catholic Church was an adamant supporter of the world is flat idea, and as with all other revolutionary new scientific ideas, it took them a while to accept it. The Catholic Church is like a dog’s tail. It is always behind.

Creationism is another insane, almost impossible idea of the Catholic Church’s. They say that in the beginning, god was the only thing. So how did he get there? He just appeared? Why did he wait so long to create the earth? What created him? I have debated with several people on this subject and I have received such things as the idea of separate worlds and different dimensions that god originated from. It always comes back to the same question: What created him? It is an endless debate that people just need to figure out on their own, from their own ideas and common sense and logicality.

And here, my speech comes to a close. I know that I left many things out such as the other faiths. But for the most part, I have no problem with Judaism, Islam, Hinduism and all the other faiths. The real problem is with Catholicism. The other faiths have never bothered me; they have never knocked on my doorstep for donations or to preach to me. I have never seen a Jewish man murder people in the name of his lord. Only Christians.
