Disappointed Doomsday Worshippers Unleash Fury At Preachers
---
SEOUL - Disillusioned worshippers attacked preachers Thursday who had led them to believe that doomsould come. Leaders of the Seoul-based Mission for the Coming Days church, which had predicted ta ensday would bring the beginning of the end of the world, said their timing had been wrong. Plie ai curch leaders could be charged with fraud.
Some of the church's estimated 20,000 believers, many of whom had left their
jobs or sold homes to prepare for the end of the world, reacted angrily.
After doomsday services ended early Thursday, worshipers threw hymn books at one preacher, cornered lapped another and pulled one from his pulpit and beat him, Korean media reported.
Critics say the mentally troubled and the insecure were easily lured by the
doomsday predictions and government officials accused the church of creating
a social crisis. The believers had expected ''rapture'' - the ascent to heaven of the faithful - atight Wednesday, followed by 7 years of apocalypse, bringing the earth's annihilation and the secn oig of Christ.
Some 2,500 believers had gathered at the main church in Seoul Wednesday to
pray for hours in preparation for the rapture. As many as 20,000 other believers assembled at 200 ochurches across South Korea and in one church in the Philippines. One doomsday preacher, the Rv e un-ku, said on national television:
''Because it has officially been proven that the rapture did not happen, we
would like to offer an apology to society.''
''We admit that we made a mistake in predicting the day,'' Lee said.
''But Jesus will come soon without fail.''
Police said centers would be opened nationwide to receive complaints regarding
demands from the church for property or donations. They said 19 people already were in jail or undeestigation for fraud, including church founder Lee Jan-rim, 46, and a man who said he talked to o
through a piano. Lee has been jailed on charges of swindling church members
of $4 million in donations.
