So, you have a school network. Its cool cuz you have a nice and speedy line but when it comes to hotmail or messenger or even some porn (if you are sick enough to do that at school) - can you get on? Nope. Heres how.
Right, first off, you have two main setups when it comes to bypassing a content filter. The first is a software filter - these are harder to bypass - however schools dont use them much so I wont go into much detail. The proxy server technique is a much more common one.
Ok, if you can get into internet explorers setup then just skip this next bit...
Internet Explorer is most probably what you use, its also most probably secured down - not allowing you to get into internet options. Chuck IE away - we wont be needing it. Go to www.mozilla.org and download and install the browser or some other browser that is non-IE and doesnt require admin priviledges. Now here is the interesting bit.
Open your default (restricted) browser and go to google and search for a proxy list. You should find a list of IP addresses and port numbers. Pick one that is reletavly near to your geographical location. It'll be faster. Now open up mozilla or your new browser. Goto internet options or similar and click connection settings - set the proxy server to that address and port. Now click apply and hey presto! Your on an unrestricted internet. If you get some weird error like it says you cannot access this page or cant find proxy server just try a new proxy address.
Its worked for me like a charm. I'm in York, UK - and the York Council are completely crap at maintaining a secure network. I would imagine other areas are the same.
Its a nice little trick to use especially to piss off other students. They'll pay you to tell them how. Also, if the administrators find out - they'll find it hard to solve the problem. They'll need a very advanced piece of equipment to stop you using a proxy. They'll probably just ban your account :P.
Hope this helped.
