So what is a fracture of the
penis, and how is it treated?

ANSWER: A fracture of the penis is actually a tear in the tunica albuginea
-- the dense membrane covering the spongy tissue of the corpus cavernosa,
which fills with blood to cause an erection.
:: May Occur During Intercourse
Most penile fractures occur during sexual intercourse, when the penis slips
out of the vagina and thrust against the partner's body.
Or they may result from rolling over on an erection or kneading the penis
in an attempt to reduce an erection.
When the fracture occurs there may be a crackling sound, and intense pain
in the penis.
The erection collapses, and the penis may appear distorted. There is
bruising and discoloration where blood vessels rupture under the skin. The
fracture site may be revealed by a firm clot under the penile skin.
Occasionally there is also injury to the urethra.
:: Requires Doctor's Care
Ice packs may be useful first aid to reduce swelling. But any man who
experiences these signs should go to a hospital emergency room at once. X-
rays of the penis, termed cavernosography, can reveal telltale leakage of
blood from the corpora.
Prompt surgery is widely recommended because it requires a hospital stay
averaging under 4 days and rarely causes complications.
By contrast, conservative management -- consisting of penile splinting,
pressure dressings and drug therapy -- often requires a 14-day hospital
stay, and frequently leads to painful scarring and bending at the fracture
site.
