A clever little poem on the 'Net...
The 'Net
(Scarier than Poe could've ever dreamed...)
I sit unto my pooter screen..
My grey matter itching for a glean..
Or maybe just for something evil, evil, like a little gore..
Time for some DOOM, jack-in and roar.
My modem, hissing, squeeking, chirping..
Down some Jolt, excuse my burping..
My shell account waiting, waiting, waiting for my password yore..
It was SECRET, now I'm sore.
As I sit, IRCing..
Lamers, Lamers, keep appearing..
Typing in ALL CAPS and Flaming!, Flaming!, Flaming!, by the score..
And so I leave, it's quite a bore.
Telnet and FTP so Gaelic..
What's this? MY WORD! Mosaic!!
Revolutionizing what the 'Net was always though to be before..
NCSA opened the door.
Suddenly there came a fever..
The 'Net's the thing! Ach! Mein Leiber!
Time and Stone and Newsweek pouring users out onto our floor..
It's for the best, one can't ignore.
Then the parents get all restless..
Little Johnny's found alt.tasteless!
CENSOR, CENSOR, CENSOR, CENSOR, but they cannot win the war..
They'll keep it quiet, nevermore.
SLIP and PPP so neato..
WinSock, 5 hours and then we go..
Highway, Super, Information, buzzwords seem to matter nor..
Need a leased line, the speed is poor.
Links, and URL's, and HTTPing...
The World-Wide-Web, it's the real thing!
I picked up HTML in hours, home pages cranked out for sites who swore..
They'll pay me for it, evermore.
Information is free, now people know it..
But providers try to grasp and stow it..
Charging, charging, charging, charging, adding up, my debits soar!
A buck and hour, and nothing more.
