Basic P2P Filesharing Guide

by Trace

First of all, this guide is purely for information purposes only. I'm not responsible for any trouble you get yourself into. The following is designed to answer any basic questions about the how-to and where-to when it comes to the P2P and filesharing world. Hopefully, this will give people a good start on how to obtain pretty much any type of multimedia from the internet. Again, some of the information relates to illegal activity. If you get yourself caught, it's YOUR fault!

First things first: Get a broadband connection and as much storage space as possible. Otherwise, you'll run into a lot of difficulties.

Depending on what kind of media you want, there are different programs out there for different multimedia. If you want music, some programs are better than others. The same goes for movies, games, software, etc.

I highly suggest going with Kazaa Lite for your music needs. NOT Kazaa. Kazaa is the original program. Kazaa Lite is the original Kazaa minus all the ads and spyware. Kazaa Lite is a "hacked" version of Kazaa. It has all the ads and spyware removed. It contains extra tools to make the filesharing job easier, more efficient, faster, and a lot better. It has option of dis-allowing others from browsing your files (i.e. the RIAA) it also has an IP blocking feature useful for blocking ads and various other P2P enemies (i.e. the RIAA). KAZAA LITE IS FREE. Do NOT pay for it! If you were asked to pay for it somewhere along the line, YOU HAVE THE WRONG APP! Get Kazaa Lite. Kazaa Lite can be downloaded at a couple sites including www.oldversions.com and www.techtv.com. It's a little harder to find now that the original Kazaa company is cracking down on it.

For movies, software, full CDs (newer/popular) I suggest going with a BitTorrent client. BitTorrent is not like other filesharing programs you may have used. I won't get into the whole science of it (do a search on google, you'll get a much better explanation), but it basically works on a no-leech system where you must upload inorder to download. To use BT, you must download a BitTorrent client first. Most people suggest using a client other than the original one, to give yourself more control over it. You will also need to find a website such as suprnova.org to find links to torrent files which will initiate your downloading process. Once again, do a search on google, it has all the answers you need.

Last, and definitely NOT least...IRC. A popular one to use is mIRC at mirc.com. IRC stands for Internet Relay Chat, but is also one of the head honchos when it comes to obtaining files. IRC is more advanced, and you will need to learn some commands and IRC basics inorder to get what you want. The best thing about IRC is that when you want the latest and greatest, you'll probably find it on IRC first. IRC is not illegal, and you can get started by reading some guides on google. You will need to learn how DCC and FSERVES work. There's much more to learn and explain when it comes to IRC, but I will leave that to that experts who run the whole operation.

There are other methods out there such as newsgroups, usenet, other p2p programs, select warez sites, etc. but you will probably find most luck with the three I have just given you above.

Remember, knowledge is power. Knowledge should also be free. P2P evolves around people sharing with eachother and helping eachother. Learn as much as you can and SHARE! DON'T BE A LEECHER! Leechers are just as much enemies as the RIAA, and you'll be instantly rejected by the P2P community if you choose this path.

Good luck, and happy downloading! :)
