This file was written to serve as a warning to -=ANYONE=- who
uses the GUARDIAN FILE PROTECTION PROGRAM (from Seth Crews Guardian
Technologies ©) Your Data is not as safe as he would have you think.
I recently downloaded this program, and within five minutes broke
what Seth calls an impossible to break password algorithm. He states that
since his program calls for a 6-digit password using any of the 255 ascii
characters (leading to over 200 TRILLION possible passwords) and that the
algorithm changes with each password that it was entirely safe and impossible
to decompile. He was wrong!!!
I first wrote two small files ( 1.DAT and 2.DAT ) that contained
the four capital letters (A, B, C, and D) along with the carriage return
and line feed and then encrypted them with two different passwords (123456
and 654321) What I found was that the first result produced a file with
each character moved 51 places down the ascii chart. The second test moved
them 52 places. Then I noticed that the character "3" is decimal code 51
and character "4" is decimal code 52 and that both of these characters had
occured in the third place of the password. I tested this again changing the
surrounding characters but leaving the third the same and it encrypted and
decrypted with no problem, thereby reducing the possible passwords to only
255 possibilities, which is NO PROBLEM to hack out even to a novice.
I write this text file so that people encrypting their files with
this program will not fall prey to a false sense of security. The program
comes under the name GUARDxx.zip where "xx" is the version number. I have
tried this on the version here on &TOTSE and the previous ones I have
encountered and his password scheme is the same.
