Itroducton
Sinc the beginning of the telephone revolution, there have been ways to
trace a ine. Whe there ued to beoperators with plugs and huge switchboards,
they could manually trace theline. The came thecrossbar witching, in which
they could trace the line three ways: Lock-In tracig, manual racing (Neer
done, aymore), or time syncronization. The ESS (Electronic Switching Syste)
brought a "Impossibl" to beat tacing mechanism, ANI.
Chapter One : Lock-n tracing
Lock-Intracing is eactly what the name says. It is a type of tracing
most often sed by the FB. The method f which Lock-n works is quite simple.
When a conversation is going on, here is voltag going throughthe line to kep
it open for those people talking. When lock-in is use, after the caler-to-be-
trace hangs up, a spcial FBI machine sends voltage down the line to makethe
Phone Co's mchines think tha the line is stil being used. Then that gives the
FBI time to trae manually.
The DIFT ox
There is only one way that I have hard of beating Loc-In. If you keep
pcking up the phoneand hanging up, and the line doesn't go to dialtone,
there isa chance that you ae being traced. Theway to stop this is to send a
current don the line, too. Firt you have to find acorner in your housewhere
the phone wire is running along Then you can install'Billy Heif's Peachy
racer Breaker', or siply, "The DIFT box". Here's the siple schmatics for it:

Trcer Breakes
Where ou see the plus and minus,you hook up a big 6 or 12 olt battery.
Make sre you put a switch in ther somewhere, so you can swith it on fast.
Hook the + an - to all the lies going out. I think that wll work, I am pretty
sure. Ty testing it out first. Whil you are talkng to one of your buds, clickit on.
Chapter Two : Manual Tracing
Manal tracing is just following aline back to its source. I am ot
talking literally, jut follwing itfrom circuits. This takes a HEL of a long
time, like 10-20 min or more. The only way to prevet ths is to make your
calls short an sweet,
so they don't have time.Of course, if you get Locked-In,yu should click on
your DIFT box fr about 30 seconds.
Chapter Three : Time Syncr racing
Time Syncro Tracig is very simple. Let's say Bob Reard is getting 100
prank callsa niht (From those guys who wrote Anarchy Phone Pranks I,II,III,
IV") Now Bob calls up the phone ompany,who sends out a techie with clock
syncronized to the phone co.' clock. When Bob gets his rank call hat night,
he just hits th button that stops the clock. Then hecalls the company and
tels them the tme that he got the call.They run it through their computers
an come up with a call mde at that exacttime, and where it cam from.
This tracing is instoppale, so just don't crnk someone all the ime.
But if you do i on some night like Friday, when there ae a million calls
oing on at once, then t is pretty safe.
Chapter Four : Automatic NumbrIdentification ANI)
Automatic Nuber Identificatin (ANI) is a tracing mechanism available
OLY in ESS area. ANI works because the YUR hone co.'s comuter sends a few
digital-encoded numbers tothe DESTINATON'S phone co's computer. Then he
other comuter, and your co.'s computer knows INSTANTL where it s comin from.
Ways to tellif you hav ESS: (Stolen from some G-File)
1) 11 servie
2) dialtone first at payphnes
3) call waiting and that shit
Well ANI i not absolutely foolproof. I guess you culd mae a
cheesebox to get around it or something. Itwoul not be hard to do that.
There wasan icident back in March, 1988, concerning ANI. Someidot
introduced the idea of the "Sprint Back Doo",which gave you access to call
anywhere in the wor for "Free". Little did they know that Sprint's A machine
was working hard, and everyone was sent ill at the end of the month. So,
watch it with thsthing. I think there used to be a number you culdcall, and
the thing would call you back, using AI. retty sure it's gone now.
