12. Ringing Test

If your phone sounds unusually quiet, perhaps you want to check that the
telephone exchange is ringing your phone properly. If all your friends and
family are unavailable to help you test your phone's ringer, you can do
it yourself thanks to a feature found on some (but probably not all) Bell
exchanges that allows the phone to be called back. As a bonus, you can check
out how well your dialing is working while you're doing the ringback test.

Plan 1: - if you are in the Hamilton or Oshawa areas, skip to Plan 2
as this will not likely work. Besides, this could actually ring
someone else up instead because of the local exchanges involved
in those areas
- Try dialing '57' plus the last five digits of your telephone number.
- If you get another dial tone, you've reached the ringback test
- If not, skip to Plan 2
(+) - To check your dialing at this point, you can dial the digits 1, 2,
3, ... to 0. After dialing the '0', you should be rewarded with
two bursts of a different tone to indicate that your dialing is
working properly. You get back the testing dial tone.
- If you want to have the phone ring back, flash your switch hook
for a moment; after this, the dial tone should change to another
tone. Then hang up and wait for your phone to ring. Pick it up,
and you'll get the special tone again. To finish the test, hang
up and leave it hung up for 5 seconds or so. You should be back
to normal at this point.

Plan 2: - Try dialing '99' plus the last five digits of your telephone number.
- If you get another dial tone, you have the ringback test. Proceed
the same was as from the point marked (+) in Plan 1 above.
- if not, try Plan 3

Plan 3: - Try dialing '999' plus all seven digits of your telephone number.
- If you get another dial tone, you have the ringback test. Proceed
the same was as from the point marked (+) in Plan 1 above.
- if not, the ringback test may not be active on your exchange,
or perhaps a different set of codes is used. However, you should
not risk dialing other active local numbers when doing so. A
payphone, since local calls without coin payment are blocked,
might be the best place to try finding codes, if you can find
payphones with your exchange on them nearby.

Plan 4: - if none of the above work, there may not be any easily accessible
ringer on your exchange, or it may be on a different setup that
will work much like the above. Perhaps another prefix like '95'
or '55' might work. However, it will not be numbers that
correspond to any regular local service.
