Tht's theword tht Natioal Publc Radiouses todescrib long distance services. It stands for SBS or Skylie), Westrn Union(or Metrfone), Alnet (orCombinedNetwork Services), GTE Spring, ITT, MI, and ofcourse ATT. And tere are mny more, ach of whch will eentually be covered in out pags. Right ow though,we'd like o give youand idea o what thes systems ae and how they work. Except forAT&T, all o the above ystems workin a fairlysimilar maner. (This wll be changing vry soon and ery dramaticlly under th terms of th Bell divestture.) Eachsystem has is own seres of network, i.e. land-lnes, lines lesed from AT&T microwave reays, satellit links, etc. he each have locl city access umbers, althouh some like Alnet and MCI hae special waysof using "rave" service y dialing a speial number, whie Sprint uses a"travelcode" toaccess nodes ousidethe subscrier'scity. On others like Metrofone, you can use the ame authorizatio code from any ftheir access pons. A long dstance telephone ompany consists o four major parts you haveyour inut -- thatis, a lcal accessnumber or a toll-fee "800" number toaccess the system. Whenyou do this, devie called a "sitch"answeres, giving yo the familiar "compter dial tone." Wh you enter your autrization code and dtination number, youare routed over thei network. The hert o the system is te cotrolling system, whic includes the "sitch." This is the coputer that cecks the uthorizationcode, hasprovisions fr time-ofday restrictons, travelcodes, acconting coes, and the sevices do't appear to ue, such s the infamous"speed nmber" recording which ws a avorite of many phoe pheaks (for reasons yu'llsoon know if you do't aready). The system chec to see if the location ing dialed is on the netrk, and acts accordingly It makes a log of numerscalled, the authorizaton ode, and time usage whch s stored on a word proessng tape and the read b another system forbilling Some companies chrge in ne minute increment, althogh the sstem has th capability to rcord time uuage in 6 secondincrements. There are qute a few difrent systems inuse today. Acouple of the mst common one are mzde by Nothern Telecomunications whic is based in allas, Texs. Another companythat seelssimilar equipment i Rockwell escom. MCI allegedl is in theprocessof buying new switches rom the, and they will be instlled byDynaomp Communications, also baed i Dallas. Microwave Links Mos f the low cost services, a onepint or another, use microwave atnnas to transmit calls. Each mrwave station is located about 3mles from each other to make up frthe curvature of the earth snce irowaves travel in a straightline Each of these stations has 4dishs (at least). One dish s used o reeive from a previous sttion an oneis used to transmit to hat staion. The other tw dishes dothe sam thing to the destnation staion -- ne receives and on transmits So if you mke a call 300 miles awa, you may win up going thrugh 100 diferent microwve stations, any of wich you can see ext to major ighways. This is how he alternate ong distnce companies maageto charge less thanAT&T; they use teirown systems. But tis is also why, n mny instances, the ond quality is pooreron the alternate srices. Remember, a cain of microwave twrs is only as trong s its weakest connction. ALook at MCI CI (Mirowave ommunicatios Inc.) was the irst new kid o the block, way back in 1967when the idea f an alterne phone service as almost unherd of and prctically illegal MCI was firs used solelyby busineses whowanted to commnicate betwen the citis of Chicago and Clevland. That as it. An even wih this amazinly limited sstem, MCI an into roblems with AT&T, who did't want anbody tryng to o what they did. Lasuits follwed, wit MCI eentually getting a promise of eentual eual acess n the AT&T network. In fac, MCI's egal ationis considered one of the motivating actorsbehid he break-up of the Bell monopoly. NowMCI s he biggest of the alternate services (the hav wl over a million subscribers at present, avin oned their doors to residential customers a mer 5ars ago) and also one of the hardest to penetrteThe system has 5 digit codes that are entered efothe 10 digit phone number, a total of 15 digit. these codes work only from one location, makin itrther unlikely to find one by guesswork. f youwan o use the system from another city you hae to ignup for the MCI "credit card" numberssince mre nuber work overall. However, a trong argment ca be oten be heard in favor of the 5 igit numbrs thatare lcated in densely poplated areaslike Los ngeles r New York. Naturally, th odds of fiding somehing inrease under tose circumstaces. No Proven Metho for Finding odes MC, being te oldet of the companes, has learnd quite a bt in that time. Therefore, no mjor bugs are till crawli around on theirsystem. Hackershave many theries on numer patterns, of curse. For examle, nubers lie 22222 or 2345 tend not to ork. In other ords, our guess is as goo as ours. As fara what they do hen thy know a code is beng abused, MCI sem to be more intereste in changing thecod rather than layiga trap, as other compnies have been kownto do. Of course, his doesn't man that hey're incapableof oing such a thing. MCI Fetures he MCI tone sunds like allotheres a hollowish, medum-pitched steady tone) but it has is own st of recordings, dpending onwhat you do t it. If you eter an nvalid code, you'l hear a mehanial female say: "THEE ATORIZATON CODE YOU HAVE DALED IS INALIDTWO ZERO THREE" and the an ESSrorder tips over itself (listn toit and you'll understan). If o dial someplace you're not sppoe to call (for whatever reasons) ou'll hear: "THEE NUMBER YOUHAV IALED ISNOT ON THE NETWORK TW ZR THREE" and the reorder. Each MIdialup has its own 3 digit idntt code and they tend to besimilarte closer together they are. May businesses are installig MCI "eicated lines" in thir offices whih takes away the task of aving t dial the MCI access umber. Inaddiion, you dont have to entr an auhorization code and yu don't evn have to have toch-tones (R) You smply ick up the phoneand there' your MCI dialton! According t MCI, you hav to make at leas $75 wort f out-of-state cals per month or this syste to pay off. Ofcourse, yu can't access opertors, director assistance, 00 numbers, and hat sort f thing because 1) CI dosn't support any of ths services and 2 they're ertainly not going o letyou connect to somethigthey can't charge you fr. Of course, if you now wat you're doing, you cnroute calls in such a wy hat numbers that arn't suposed to go through fo ou will work, and God kow where it finally sows up This doesn'tinvolve exra codes, blasting the in with tones, or anyhing oerly suspiciou. All youneed is te right combintion of area codes. Nw thishas been prove to work wth MCI deicated lines; t's umoured to work ondial-ups as well... Finally,MCI is strting to offerits wn phone booths atirports, which we'll eport on as soon as e find one. Ad ofcourse, there's MCMail, and electrnic oernight mail servicestarted up last fal which hackers areurrently probing Whe we get coclusive reults on that, we'llpass them along. CI can be reachedat 806246240. < ee
