Shoplifting Laws In Australia
by Sir Cecil
In Australia today, shoplifting is one of the easiest
things in the world to do and one of the hardest
things to get caught at. Recently at where I work we
had to do a course on shoplifting and what to do.
Basically, the course summarised what we were
liable for in the event of something being stolen.
These two important things were listed.
- That we cannot accuse someone of shoplifting
inside the store as we must give them all the
chances to buy the item.
- That we cannot touch someone when they leave
the store, no matter how much the item is worth.
In fact, the only thing that we could do was contact
the police and give them an adequate description
of the item stolen and the person. So what this
means for all you who are considering shoplifting
is that if you disguise yourself, the police and the
shop cannot do a thing. If they touch you or in any
way try to detain you, you can:
- Get them arrested for assault
- Sue them for assault, damages, etc
The only instance in which you can be foiled is
when a member of the public decides to do a
citizen's arrest. Even then, you cannot be detained
by the foolhardy hero.
