The Credo of Scientific Pantheism

The Pantheist Credo:
What Scientific Pantheists believe

---------------------------------------------------------------

Background to the credo.

The Pantheist Credo is not like the creed of Christianity. It is not
intended to be recited by rote or read out in meetings (though it can
be, in part or in whole, if any group wishes to) nor is subscription
to every word of the credo a requirement of joining the scientific
pantheist movement.

We don't expect people to be zombies. But people associate into
religious groups because they share certain beliefs, so it is best to
have a good idea of what those basic beliefs are before joining a
group.

Basically the creed is intended as a reminder to our members of the
central points of our beliefs, and a guide to our core beliefs for
people who are thinking of joining us, so they can get a good idea
of who we are.

The Credo was drawn up and agreed by a working group of fifteen
people from the Scientific Pantheism e-mail list (to join the list see
details at The Scientific Pantheism mailing list.) The group began
work at the beginning of September 1997 and finished in early
December 1997. Decisions were taken on a democratic basis, and
required a 75% majority.

Since adaptability and openness to new evidence are among our
basic values, the Credo will be reviewed at regular intervals, by a
similar process.

We are now in the process of creating a new organization to
promote these beliefs and to create local groups. If you are in
sympathy with the credo, register now for the new pantheist
movement. When we are ready to accept members, you will be
notified by e-mail of subscription details.

1.We revere and celebrate the Universe as the ever-changing totality
of being, past, present and future. It is self-creating, self-
organizing, and inexhaustibly diverse. Its overwhelming power and
fundamental mystery establish it as the only real divinity.

2.All matter, energy, and life are an interconnected unity of which
we are an inseparable part. We rejoice in our existence and seek to
participate ever more deeply in this unity through knowledge, art,
celebration, meditation, empathy, love and ethical action.

3.We are an inseparable part of Nature, which we should cherish,
revere and preserve in all its magnificent beauty and diversity. We
should strive to live in harmony with Nature locally and globally.
We believe in treating all living creatures with compassion,
empathy, and respect. We believe in the inherent value of all life,
human and non-human.

4.We believe in freedom, democracy, justice, equity, and non-
discrimination, and in a world community based on peace, an end
to poverty, sustainable ways of life, and full respect for human
rights.

5.We believe there is only one kind of substance, matter/energy,
which is not base or inferior, but wonderfully vibrant and creative
in all its forms. Body, mind, and spirit are not separate, but all
inseparably united.

6.We respect reality and keep our minds open to the evidence of the
senses and of evolving science. These are our best means of
obtaining and refining our knowledge of the Universe, and on them
we base our aesthetic and religious feelings about reality.

7.We see death as a return to nature of our elements. Our actions,
our ideas and memories of us live on in the world, according to
what we do in our lives.

8.We believe that every individual can have direct access through
perception and emotion to ultimate reality, which is the Universe
and nature. There is no secret wisdom accessible only through
gurus or revealed scriptures.

9.We respect the general freedom of religion, and the freedom of all
pantheists to express and celebrate their beliefs, as individuals or in
groups, in any non-harmful ritual or symbolic form that is
meaningful to them.
