LA 1990 STARMAN relaxacon

Notes on the LA 1990 STARMAN Relaxacon 3/30/90 to 4/2/90, and the Ohio
STARMAN, ETC. multi-fandom con of 6/8/90 to 6/10/90. (Last update 8/23/90.)

LA 1990 STARMAN Relaxacon --------------------------------------------------
The following combined from my [Todd Andrews] own recollection, and excerpts
from the Spotlight Starman of Ohio newsletter (SSOH) #20, Best Buddies
newsletter (BB) #32 and Blue Llights (BL) newsletterzine #29/30. Sources of
some of this information are Lynda Sappington, Candi Farmer, Jean Laidig,
Sue Skarin, Vicki Werkley, and Juanita Harrell, from the aforementioned
publications.

Saturday - Auction at the Magic Castle to benefit the Society for the
Preservation of Variety Arts (SPVA), of which Robert Hays is a board member.
Total amount raised was $4311.

Sunday - Party at Patrick Culliton's house. There were more than 100
Starpeople at the party. Starpeople came from everywhere between and
including the east and west coasts, Canada, New Zealand, and Austrailia.

Cast and crew attending (in alphabetical order:) Portia Adams -
Christopher Daniel Barnes' tutor, Joe Adamson - assistant director, Joseph
M. Altadonna - Art Director, Eric D. Andersen - Director of Photography,
Michael Cavanaugh - FSA Agent George Fox, Patrick Culliton - FSA Agent
Wylie, John Goode - first assistant cameraman, Mike Gray -
producer/writer/director, James Griffin - assistant director, Patti Hall -
assistant to Leon Tokatyan, Robert Hays - Starman, Joanna Houy - extra,
John Houy - stand-in and extra, Rick Hurst - Charlie Ewing of "Blue Lights",
Syrie Astrahan James - writer, John Mason - producer/writer, Andrea
Sternberg Purcell - crafts service person, Steve Purcell - special effects,
Stephanie Rose - stand-in and extra, Scott Spencer - gaffer, Sandy
Stockwell - assistant to Mason and Gray, Nina Szedlacsek - assistant to Jim
Henerson

"Starparents" John and Evie Hays were present, Dick Mentzer of the SPVA, and
Spotlight Starman "founding parents" Debbie Markley and Pam Mandeville.
Regrets were sent by several other members of the cast and crew, who hope to
come to our next party.

The "perps": Patrick Culliton - instigator and reunion host, Sue Skarin and
Teresa Troutman - main organizers, Juanita Harrell - auction coordinator,
Vicki Werkley - cast and crew outreach coordinator, Dori Van Brocklin -
kitchen coordinator, Sue Skarin - entertainment coordinator.

The following came from the Spotlight STARMAN of Ohio Newsletter #20, April
1990, copyright 1990 by Lynda Sappington, used by permission: When Michael
Cavanaugh arrived, he dashed across the room and grabbed Robert Hays,
pulling Bob's head down to his shoulder and said, "I've got you at last!"
Candi [Farmer]'s photo of this moment shows Bob having a good laugh while
being "captured". Apparently he's gotten over his fear of "Fox"!

I happen to know though, that they both left the party separately, so
STARMAN is on the run again, with Fox following....

STARMAN, ETC. con ----------------------------------------------------------

Notes on my trip to the STARMAN, ETC. convention 6/7/90 to 6/12/90 held at
he Dayton Airport Inn in Dayton, Ohio

The following highlights are from my own notes/recollection, and those
marked with [*] from the Spotlight STARMAN of Ohio Newsletter #22, June
1990, copyright 1990 by Lynda Sappington, used by permission. A complete
con report is contained in SSOH #22.

Friday - 6/8/90

Registration - STARMAN movie promotional buttons "Get Ready Company's
Coming" were given out; small spheres donated by Dr. Bill Breuer aka "Dr.
Bill". Jean Laidig sold the official "STARMAN, ETC." buttons.

The evening was spent primarily getting things set up for the convention -
the con suite ("food station"), auction room, art room, video room, and
huckster room. (The video room was then operating all weekend long showing
tapes of ALIEN NATION, STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION, SHADOW CHASERS,
BATTLESTAR GALLACTICA, KOYAANISQATSI, OUTPOST, BADLANDS 2005, THE DAY THE
EARTH STOOD STILL, ENEMY MINE, ET, DOCTOR WHO, and many more.)

Saturday - 6/9/90

Phone calls to Robert Hays (he was sick, so we talked with Cherie his wife),
Stephanie Rose, and John and Evie Hays. [*>] We talked with Evie and John
Hays and heard all about the computer Bob gave them for John's birthday....
Bill Breuer and John Hays talked about Apollo 13 astronaut Fred W. Haise,
Jr., who they both know. ...John Hays was Fred Haise's first commanding
officer when John was stationed in Omaha, and Bill Breuer knew the astronaut
when Haise was with Grumman. (For those of you too young to remember, Haise
was the pilot of the lunar module which had a blowout in orbit above the
moon. As a consequence, they had to abort the mission and get back to earth
under their own power.) [<*]

Slide presentation by Doug Beekman. He talked about the different
techniques and specialties of the people who work for him.

Slide presentation by Dr. Bill. Mundane and senator <who shall remain
nameless> bashing. Demo of heating up of a shuttle tile by a butane torch,
and everyone able to handle it afterwards without any blisters. Really
funny Lost episodes of Star Trek. He talked about some of the "greetings"
put on the Voyager record. "Senators in space" episode.

There was a banquet in the evening, and presentations were made to the
guests of honor.

After the banquet, we all gathered in the video room to watch an FM episode,
then "Janeen and De's LA STARMAN Adventure" - a home video of the LA 1990
STARMAN Relaxacon. This was followed by several music videos produced by
STARMAN fans. There were some clips and interviews of QUANTUM LEAP also
shown. [*>]...STARMAN cast member Stephanie Rose (she brought the
"Pepparoni-pineapple pizza for Paul Forrester" in "The System" and was the
nurse in "Starscape") generously shared her "behind-the-scenes" tape of the
filming of STARMAN episodes "Peregrine" and "Society's Pet," as well as the
beach scene from "Fever." Seeing John Mason at a cast birthday party
reading to the cast and crew fan mail and complimentary letters from ABC and
talking about how the network was so delighted with STARMAN's ratings is an
interesting moment in our "history." [<*]

Sunday - 6/10/90

Best of show in the art competition was Doug Beekman's "Computer Wizard".

Auction - lots of items were sold. Several nice, hard to come by NASA
posters were donated by Dr. Bill. Jean Laidig gave her now-regular Waldo
presentation, and said of the ABC carrying case she found for the Waldos -
"proof positive that ABC can still carry STARMAN!"

Monday - 6/11/90 (some of us stayed after the con was officially over)

Tour of the Air & Space Museum with Candi Farmer (one of the con organizers)
as host.

-----

- [*>] STARMAN, ETC. had 65 people registered.... We had 16 states and two
countries (Canada and the US) represented, and 26 non-Star People in
attendance, most of whom were from the STAR TREK fandom. ...our total
income from the auction and art show combined is $1378.10! [<*] [The auction
was to benefit BLUE LIGHTS and Greenpeace.]
