[Note: The FAQ makes reference to the fact that the current releases of the
troff sources work with C/A/T troff and Adobe TranScript's pscat.
Because that means the guide does not contain any of the special
PostScript features, support for old C/A/T troff will probably be
removed in a the future. If this will affect you, I suggest that you
obtain groff or ditroff and Adobe TranScript psdit. Otherwise you
can obtain the pre-formatted PostScript files from the ftp site or
from my site via anonuucp.]

STAR TREK: The Next Generation Program Guide FAQ

Last revised: 5/8/92

1. What is the STAR TREK: The Next Generation Program Guide (STTNGPG)?

The STTNGPG is a major reference to the Paramount television series.
It contains several sections:

a) The credit/synopsis section. This section contains at least
a one page synopsis to each and every ST:TNG episode. This
section is in opposing page format. The left (even) page
contains the credits for the particular episode. The right
(odd) page contains the synopsis.
b) The A appendix contains the complete air schedule for ST:TNG,
sorted a few ways for reference.
c) The B appendix contains the complete cast listing, listed by
both the actor's name and the various characters.
d) The C appendix contains a reference to the writers and directors.
e) The D appendix contains a list of all the other production
credits, season by season.
f) The E appendix contains a disclaimer notice listing. This is the
Paramount copyright notice screen, seen right before the Paramount
logo. This is for trivia buffs, as some errors have occurred.
g) The F appendix contains the list of award nominations and award
wins.
h) The G appendix contains reports from attendees of various
conventions.
i) The H appendix contains an index to the Starlog ST:TNG magazine
articles.
j) The I appendix contains various articles culled from TV Guide.
k) The J appendix contains various articles culled from newspapers.
l) The K appendix contains misc information that doesn't fit the
above appendixes.
m) The Z appendix is the guide's index.

The STTNGPG is approximately 400 pages, designed to be printed as a
double-sided document and kept in your favorite three-ring binder.

2. How do I get a copy of the guide?

Currently the guide is distributed via anonftp and anonuucp (see below)
in the following forms:

a) The troff sources
b) PostScript in both New Century Schoolbook and Times Roman fonts.
Both also use Helvetica.

During the season, the guide is updated monthly as updates only. The
troff sources are in patch format and PostScript files contain only the
pages that have changed.

3. Which version of the guide should I get (troff or PostScript)?

This is system dependent. If you don't have access to any of the
Unix troff programs, you should look at getting the PostScript files.
Obviously this means that you have to have access to a PostScript
printer. Keep in mind that the STTNGPG guide is many pages long and
will take a while to print.

The troff sources are for those users that want more control over
the printing of the guide, probably using a font that I don't use.

The PostScript files are for those users who don't have troff, or
a troff that can support many of the features that I use. The Post-
Script files are also for users who just don't have to time to try
and use troff. A majority of the users are using the PostScript files.

4. If I use the troff sources, what versions of troff does the guide support?

The STTNGPG is currently printed using the 1.05 version of groff, a
GNU freeware troff software package. The PostScript files that are
distributed at the ftp site are done using groff. The troff sources
also support the AT&T Documenter's Workbench, version 2.0 and later,
with the Adobe TranScript psroff program, for PostScript output. These
two troff programs will enable you to get the exact same output that
I get. The Unix make program is used to manage the printout of the
guide. Makefiles for DWB troff and groff are supplied.

While the troff sources support old C/A/T troff, along with the Adobe
TranScript ptroff program, the PostScript output will NOT contain any
of the PostScript logos and graphics files. I suggest that users of
old troff use the preformatted PostScript files.

Currently the troff sources do not support the Chris Lewis psroff
program (not related to Adobe's psroff). The psroff is supported as
if it were old troff and Adobe TranScript. PostScript inclusion
for psroff may be included in the future.

Other troff compatible programs are not supported. If they are 100%
compatible with AT&T DWB 2.0+, then it may work. If the PostScript
file inclusion is different than the way that Adobe TranScript wants
it done, then it will not work. Everyone seems to want to do Post-
Script file inclusion differently, creating a real problem.

The HP LaserJet is supported. See the troff source README file for
complete details.

5. Is the guide available for other types of text processors?

Nope.

6. Will it ever?

Nope.

7. How do I handle troff source updates.

The Unix patch program, version 2.0, patch level 9 or later, is
required in order to add the patches that are available. The troff
source update file contains instructions on how to patch the guide.

Troff source patches are delivered in a file with a name in the
format: sttngVVVd, where VVV is replaced with the version number.
As an example, the file sttng502d contains the patches for version
5.01, bringing the guide up to version number 5.02. The patches will
not install if you are not at the previous level. Also included is
a README file for a particular version, like README.502. When obtain-
ing files via ftp or anonuucp, get that file as well.

9. How do I handle the PostScript updates?

The PostScript update files are not patches to the PostScript files.
These files contain only the pages which have changed. You print
these and replace the pages in your master copy. If you use the
master copy to create a photocopied double-sided version, it is
suggested that you make double-sided copies before installing the
new laser printed pages in the master copy. This will keep you from
completely re-photocopying the complete guide.

Users of laser printers that support double-sided printed will normally
not have a problem. PostScript update files print both sides of the
paper. Exceptions to this will be noted in the special README file.
For printing the complete guide from scratch, it is suggested that the
files sttng-in.ps, sttng-[12345].ps all be cat'd into one file and
that file printed, since those sections contain an un-even number
of pages.

10. How do I get a copy of the guide in plain text?

A plain text (ASCII) version is available at the ftp site. See the
current list that is available at the ftp site. I do not put out
or support this version, though it is produced from the latest troff
sources and has been authorized. But, I have nothing else to do
with it. Questions or problems have to be reported to the poster
of the version that you obtained.

11. Can I produce the guide in ASCII form?

You can take the troff source and deroff it or try using the -a
option for troff. I cannot guarentee the results when using these
methods.

You can also use the st2ascii script that was written by Raymond Chen
([email protected]). It is a shell script that uses perl
to extract the text from the troff source.

12. I can't do any of the things mentioned above. Can I get a printed
version of the guide?

Yes, a published version of the guide is available from Star Tech,
or from me personally. Send $1.00 to Star Tech, PO Box 1322,
Dunlap, TN, 37327 for the latest catalog. If you want to get a
copy directly from me, send me e-mail for an order form.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR OBTAINING THE GUIDE VIA FTP

The montana e-mail server has been placed on hold.

The following is the information supplied by the ftp site, as of 5.05:

Note -- All revisions older than 505 have been removed. Apparently my
troff sources were out of sync, and some extra trash was getting thrown
in that shouldn't have been. So if you're at any version other than 504,
you will have to retrieve the whole thing to get up-to-date.

Note -- I did not preview these...

Welcome to a home for the STTNG guides.

This site is: ftp.coe.montana.edu. Startrek stuff is in /pub/STARTREK, with

problems.

Welcome to Mike Brown's (Vidiot) STTNG guides. I've rearranged things a
little bit from the format that Mike distributes them. The following is a
list of files in the archive.

Naming conventions:

"font" - can be one of NCSB (New Century SchoolBook) or TR (Times Roman).
XXX - if you retrieve files from this dir, your guides will be at revision
XXX
PSupdate - means dir contains files in "font" upgrading from previous version
to XXX
PS - means dir contains a FULL release of the guide. If you retrieve
files from the highest "font"-PS-XXX, you have the latest version
of the complete guide that I have.

So:

NCSB-PS-404 is a complete copy of the guide as of revision 404 in NCSB.
TR-PSupdate-403 contains PS files in TR to upgrade the guide from revision
402 to revision 403.

OBTAINING THE GUIDE VIA THE FTPMAIL E-MAIL SERVER

There is a server called [email protected]. Send the one line mail
message "help" to that address and you will get the ftpmail help file.

Using the information from the help file, you would send the following mail
message to [email protected]:

connect ftp.coe.montana.edu
cd pub/STARTREK
ascii
get README
get README.vidiot
quit

And if you decided from the README file that you needed the file goo.tar.Z
(a binary compressed file):

connect ftp.coe.montana.edu
cd pub/STARTREK
binary
uuencode
get goo.tar.Z
quit

Do NOT use the "compress" command, as the file is already compressed.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR OBTAINING THE GUIDE VIA ANONUUCP

The program guide files are available via anonymous uucp from my system.
Here are the details:

Phone: 608-274-9275
Baud: 19200(PEP only)/2400/1200
Login: anonuucp
Password: none (it will not be asked)

The main directory is ~nuucp/guides. In there you will find a file called
dir.list. Get it, as it will list all of the latest files that are in the
guides' directory. After you get it, study it and then request the files
that you need. This area contains more than ST:TNG guides and lists. The
area will be under constant changes, as new lists and updates will be added.

For some reason there is sometimes a problem while logging in. When doing
the log in procedure, the anonuucp login name may sometimes have doubled-up
characters. This can be seen when using the -x9 option of uucico. If that
happens, add a delay between each character. In most cases this solves the
problem.

Also, the login prompt may not show up. If this occurs, hang up and try
again after at least one minute.
