Revenge of the Borg

Revenge Of The Borg
------- -- --- ----

By: Edward Chapin (Steel Falcon)

Recap:
Captain Jean-Luc Picard of the Starship Enterprize, starfleet registration NCC
1701-D was unfortunately 'borgified', a term which refers to the process
created by the Borg in which a person has bionic implants placed inside them,
consequently making them 'one with the Borg'. This occured during the line of
duty when he attempted to stop the Borg from 'borgifying' the entire
population of Earth. Needless to say he was eventually successful; the
Startrek storyline does not allow for failiure. At any rate, it has been
recently discovered that the ship which the Enterprize battled was only the
first of several attempts by the Borg...

Captains Log, Stardate 112734.2:
The Enterprize has proceeded to the Wolf system, pending a full starfleet
investigation into the encounter with the Borg. We are making a preliminary
sweep of the area to find any remnants of the battle which may be of use to us
when we meet up with a second Borg ship which has appeared 6 days from Earth.
Lt. Commander Worf is preparing our weapon systems for all necessary
Adjustments...

<The Bridge Of The Enterprize>

Picard: Bring us out of warp Ensign. Data, you may begin your analysis of the
area.

Data: Aye, sir.

Riker: I'll assist Data, he may need some help. It's times like this I wish
we still had Wesley on board.

Picard: Ahh yes, the boy... agreed. He always seemed to find seemingly
obvious answers to all our problems.

Riker: At any rate, I think we'll find something; that is the only possible
reason for the writer to bring us here...

<2 hours later, Data looks up in surprise>

Data: I have just found what I believe to be a sort of... beacon.

Picard: And it's origin?

Data: It has no particular markings which would indicate where it came from,
but I cross referenced it's emmission with the signals we recieved when
you were being controlled through your sub-space link with the B...

<That instant Picard Leaps into the air, goes stiff as a board and face plants
into the floor>

Riker: Dr. Crusher to the Bridge... NOW!

Troi: I am sensing irradic thoughts... nothing in particular. Some of them
bear resemblence to some of the events which have occured since the last
time we encountered the Borg.

A Flustered Ensign: Well... uh... don't you think you should, well, roll him
on to his back?

Riker: Don't Patronize me! I have 11 years seniority over you, I know what I'm
doing... Worf, roll him onto his back.

<Worf Jumps over the railing behind the Captains Chair and assists Troi in
rolling over the Captain.>

Worf: The Captain is Honourable... he will survive.

Riker: Glad to here it.

<Crusher bursts into the Bridge with 2 assistants and yanks out a small
beeping device...>

Crusher: His life signs are stable, there is no physical damge... Except for
a broken nose.

Riker: Ouch... that must have hurt.

Crusher: At any rate, he seems fine at the moment, I may be able to issolate
what's wrong with him in sick bay.

Riker: Do it, meanwhile Data and I will find out what that beacon is.

Crusher: What beacon?

Riker: The beacon which is floating around outside the ship.

<Crusher carries the Captain off the Bridge>

Data: As I was about to say, I believe the Beacon may be emmiting the same
sub-space signals which the Borg were using to control the Captain.

Riker: So you think the Borg might have something to do with it?

Data: That is a reasonable assumption.

Riker: Very good. In the meantime, I'm going to take a rest, you have the
bridge.

<Sickbay - Picard is on a bed>

Crusher: (softly) Jean-Luc?

Picard: Mumble

Crusher: (softly) Jean-Luc?

Picard: Mumble

Crusher: (slightly louder) Jean-L...

An Assistant: Doctor, It appears he's hardly in any condition to speak.

Crusher: What? Oh...yes, the examination... I believe I may have something
of interest here. It just occured to me that perhaps I missed
something when I was removing the Implants from the Captain.

Assistant: Perhaps Cmdr. Data's assesment of the beacon may be of use.

Crusher: Commander Data to Sickbay.

<exactly 8.2 sec. later Data walks in>

Data: How may I help you?

Crusher: I have been examining the Captain. I believe that his current state
may be a direct result of the beacon outside the ship.

Data: That Hypothosis is correct. I have determined that it in fact is not a
beacon but a tranciever. I believe it has reactivated the captains
link with the Borg. I made that assumption while I was pin-pointing
where the signals were being directed - the exact postion of the
Captain.

Crusher: Thank you data, that will be useful. Now at least I know what to
look for... I think.

Data: Then I shall return to the bridge.

<Data walks out>

Crusher: It just occured to me! When I learned the borg may have something
to do with this, I was looking for something artificial inside the
captain. Perhaps it's something else, perhaps an altered gene in
one of his cells... I'll have to look into it more thouroughly.

<Engine Room: A small explosion>

Geordi: Riker! Get down here right now!!

Riker (over intercom): zZzZzZz

Geordi: (puzzlement) Riker?

Riker: zZz...uh...huh?? what? oh, just a minute...

<A few minutes later Riker staggers in>

Geordi: For some reason the containment field generator is failing! I can't
release the naceles automatically or manually... I'd say we have
about... 5 minutes to live.

Riker: Oh great... isn't there anything you can do?

Geordi: Nope.

Riker: Cmdr. Data, commence evacuation sequence, we're going to have matter/
antimatter exposure in about 5 minutes.

Data: (over intercom) Has geordi attempted to shut down the injectors? My
readout shows them to be active.

Riker: Geordi?!

Geordi: Oops... uh, that sounds like a good idea, I'll get right on it.

<Geordi dashes about the engine room and finally finds what he's looking for.
A small red button which he immediately presses and the engines shut down.>

Riker: I think you and I need to have a little talk some time.

Geordi: Sure thing commander, but right now, I have to find out what went
wrong.

Riker: That sounds like a reasonable Idea.

<Riker leaves the engine room and goes to the Bridge>

Data: I kept your chair warm commander.

Riker: Thanks, it's good to know that some of this crew isn't incompetent.

Data: It would have been much simpler to say (in Rikers voice) "It's good
to know that some of this crew is competent". Using two negatives is
quite inefficient, several examples of this are wh...

Riker: Enough! I get the idea.

Data: Of course. I now have a full report for you.

Riker: Go ahead.

Data: I now believe that the beacon is re-establishing the captains link with
the Borg. Earlier, Dr. Crusher made a Hypothosis that there was still
a Borg implant in the Captain. This confirmed my suspicions. I later
learned from her that there is a small, organic nanite slowly re-writing
the captains D.N.A. I believe that another of the non-artificial nanites
caused the damage to the containment field generator. I conclude that
we should destroy the beacon. It is most likely the source of our
problems, since both events occured in close proximity to it.

Riker: You don't want to study it?

Data: At the risk of the Captains life and this ship. No.

Riker: But...

Worf: I agree with Data. Klingons do not study small alien beacons which are
wreaking havoc with their ship and Captain.

Riker: Fine then. Worf, arm all phasers and Torpedoes, lock on target and
prepare to fire.

Data: A single phaser blast at low-intensity should suffice.

Worf: But it will make a bigger explosion.

Riker: Okay, a compromise, torpedoes only... Fire!

<A volley of torpedoes fly out of the ship and blow the small metal beacon
into a million or so pieces.>

Worf: That was... enjoyable. Didn't you think so Data?

Data: I am unable to feel emotions. Joy is an emotion.

Riker: Were you able to gather any important information before we blew
up the beacon?

Data: No.

Riker: Oh well. I guess we should proceed to confront the Borg ship.

Data: Yes.

Riker: Ensign, lay in a course to intercept the Borg ship at warp 8.

Ensign: Aye, sir.

Riker: Engage.

<The enterprize makes a course adjustment, shudders and then streaks away
at many times the speed of light.>

Riker: Geordi, have you made any headway with the containment field problem?

Geordi: (over intercom) No. Don't you think you should have asked me that
before you went to warp 8? Are you crazy?!

Riker: Oops. Well, do you think there is any danger?

Geordi: (over intercom) Actually, as soon as the beacon was destroyed, the
containment field came back on. That's why the injectors were
reactivated. No, there isn't any danger.

Riker: Good. Dr. Crusher, what is the Captains condition?

Crusher: (over intercom) As soon as the beacon was destroyed he sat up, said
he never felt better and began quoting Shakespeare.

Riker: I'll take that as a yes.

Crusher: (over intercom) The Captain is now returning to the bridge.

<The Bridge door slides open and the Captain Appears on the bridge.>

Picard: Number One, what is our status?

Riker: We are closing on the Borg Ship, we will engage it in 2 hours.

Picard: Did you learn anything useful from the beacon?

Data: We learned that it was in fact a Borg Tranciever controlling small
organic nanites which invaded you and the containment field generator.

Picard: Oh, is that all. Was anyone hurt?

Riker: You were. You got a broken nose.

Picard: Ahh, I see. Riker, you have the bridge, i'm going to take a little nap.

<1 hour and 59 minutes later. Picard emerges from his cabin.>

Riker: How are you feeling captain?

Picard: I feel gr...

<Picard goes stiff as a board and face plants into the floor. Geordi then
informs Riker that the Containment field generator is on the blink again.>

Riker: Oh great, not again... People, you know what to do.

<Crusher and her assistants carry the captain to sickbay and the matter/
antimatter injectors are taken off-line. A Borg ship appears on the screen.>

Riker: Data, could the Borg have caused the same problems as the small
tranciever?

Data: Yes.

Riker: Worf, open a hailing frequency to the Borg.

Worf: I strongly recommend that we raise shields and arm our weapons. The Borg
attacked us once. Who's to say that they won't again?!

Riker: May I remind you that we are on a peace mission! Now open hailing
frequencies.

Worf: (reluctantly) Aye, sir.

Riker: I am Commander William Riker, first officer on the Federation starsh...

<A picture of the interior of the Borg ship appears on the main viewing screen>

Borg: We are fully prepared for any and all hostile acts against the Borg. The
Entire human race and all vaguely related races will service the Borg.
Resistence is futile. Everything is irrelevant where compromises are
concerned. The Enterprize will escort us to sector 0,0,0 where we will
begin Borgifying. If you do not do so, you will be destroyed.

<The picture disappears before Riker can do or say anything>

Riker: ...Do as he... she... it says.

Worf: (snarling) It is dishonourable to do as the enemy commands. I will not!!

Riker: Then you are relieved of your duties!

<Worf proceeds to beat up all of the bridge security with a single sweep of his
arm.>

Riker: Okay, I guess you are not relieved... Data, what are my options.

Data: None. Obviously it would be futile as the Borg said. We have no effective
defence or weapons.

Worf: Fine... I'll do as you say. That doesn't mean I have to like it you know.

Riker: Very well, set course for Earth, proceed on impulse power.

Ensign: Aye, sir.

Riker: Engage.

<The Enterprize slowly turns about and starts crawling towards Earth.>

Data: I estimate that it will take 142 years, 3 months, 11 days, 4
hours 32 seconds 4 mi...

Riker: I get the idea! At least we'll have a good excuse for going so slowly.
Think of it this way - we have 142 years to figure out a way of
stopping them!

<A Picture of the Borg appears on the main screen again.>

Borg: If you do not increase to a minimum speed of warp factor 5 in 30 sec.,
you will be destroyed.

<The picture disappears again.>

Data: I believe I have a solution for keeping us alive.

Riker: What is it?

Data: The Borg have a cube-shaped force field around there ship. Although we
cannot physically penetrate it, I believe we can get the whole ship
inside it. The Matter/Antimatter injectors can stay on-line for 12.5
sec. before the ship explodes. If we engage the warp engines to make a
warp bubble, we can pass through the force-field perimeter in sub-space.
At that time, we will come out of warp. The Borg will not risk destroying
the ship if it is that close.

Riker: Sounds good. How long will it take?

Data: 5 seconds to set up and .005 of a second to execute. We have 10 sec.
remaining.

Riker: Do it.

<Exactly 5 seconds later the Enterprize appears inside the Borg's Force
field. 2 Meters from the hull of the Borg Ship.>

Riker: Now what?

Data: I believe Worf can answer your question.

Worf: (a big grin spreads across his face) I think Data means that the Borg
ship is now vulnerable to attack. Do I have permission to fire.

Riker: Now wait just a minute, it is our obligation to study them.

<All of the bridge crew stare at him with a look of mutiny.>

Riker: Just kidding. You have permission to fire. But first, raise our shields.

<Worf slams his hands down on every button on his console. The Enterprize
shudders as every weapon known to starfleet is hurled at the Borg ship.
Worf gets a look of gratification as it is blown to smitherines.>

Worf: Data, you can't say you felt nothing from that.

Data: Actually I felt quite a lot. The explosion was aproximately 2 million
megatons of force. I believe the ship is now hurtling towards Earth
at about Warp 2, inspight of the fact that the engines are down. It is
most likely a direct result of the explos...

Riker: Thank you Data, but I think we already figured that out.

<The Intercom then comes to life when Riker is informed that the containment
field and the Captain are both okay. And so concludes this Startrek adventure>
