ISSUE #2 -- DOWN THE LONG HARD ROAD

8888888888888888888888888888888888888888888

NOTES FROM THE EDITOR'S CAGE

"The Prize was knowing that [her] work was noticed and adored!"
-- "The Golden Boy", with apologies to Freddie Mercury

Well, folks, I still have my head, so I suppose you liked THE PRIZE #1. You
realize, of course, this means now you'll *never* be rid of me.

THE PRIZE #1 has already escaped into the world at large. MARYANN McKINNON sends
her compliments via Internet:

"Jim McMann enclosed a copy of your newsletter for Compuserve Highlander fans
along with a Babylon 5 tape he sent me, and I had some interesting
observations...

"...The official position by the producers for the apparent discrepancy between
the movies and the tv series is that they are simply in alternate universes.

"I look forward to hearing from you. Sounds like you have been having some
interesting discussions!"

Evidently, we are doing well.

HIGHLANDER, too, prospers. Although we do not as yet know whether a third season
will be commissioned (the address to bombard with support for a third season is
at the end of this newsletter), a message posted by GERARD NG provides evidence
of the increasing interest in our field:

"Some may be interested:

The 1st EVER Official HIGHLANDER Convention.
Date: October 7, 8 and 9
The Regency Hotel, Denver, CO
Guests:
Adrian Paul, Stan Kirsch and Bill Panzer (Exec. Producer).

For info, send SASE to: The Gathering
PO Box 123
Aurora, CO 80040-0123

or, call: Krystmas Tarr (303) 363-1792

(Note: I am just posting the contents of a flyer, I am NOT
involved in this.......)"

Now that I've got everyone's attention...

In this issue:

The indefatigable Helva Peters has completed the first round of updates to her
timeline of the Series, and we present the revised text here. A fuller version
of the Timeline with sources given will soon be posted to this library: watch
this space for details.

Also from Helva, a roundup of the most dramatic element of immortal life: death.

And from Bill O'Brien, the Top Ten reasons to lead, follow, or get out of our
way...

From Sheri Richardson, a brand-new recruit to our Watchers (tattoo still
stinging, Sheri...?), her attempt to make sense of the discrepancies between the
film and the series. A fuller discussion of this idea, MaryAnn's information
notwithstanding, may be found in THE PRIZE #1.

And reprinted from a more comprehensive file of upcoming episode titles for
several current science-fiction shows is a list of upcoming HIGHLANDER episodes
through May. The complete file may be found in this library, although where we'd
find the time to *watch* anything else with the traffic around here...

Share And Enjoy. Coming in April: a fool's paradise of the best and the worst.
Needed for that issue are your most absurd nightmare ideas for HIGHLANDER
episodes, crossovers, and spinoffs, and recipies for the dreaded Sully's Blue
Spooze cocktail. I'm waiting...

FIRST UPDATE TO THE TIMELINE -- 2/94

8888888888888888888888888888888888888888888

After much hard work and sacrifice (there, there, Helva, we'll get the Visine
and the tranquilizer gun :) ), HELVA PETERS has completed a revised version of
our HIGHLANDER TimeLine. This supersedes the timeline presented in THE PRIZE #1.

DUNCAN MACLEOD: MORE LIVES THAN A CAT...

8888888888888888888888888888888888888888888

HELVA PETERS brings us her analysis of how long it takes an Immortal to get back
up after the Big Ouch:

A case can be made that the amount of time it takes for an Immie to revive
varies with the amount of physical damage that was done:

HIGHLANDER - It seems unclear how long Connor was 'dead'. "Talkin' and
breathin' - and last night all but a corpse".

THE GATHERING - Connor was gut-stabbed and underwater, injured but not dead,
until Duncan fished him out. Once the knife was removed, he apparently
recovered quickly.

FAMILY TREE - Duncan's 'first death' in flashback. The Old Lady screamed about
five minutes after Duncan's father closed his eyes.

INNOCENT MAN - Duncan was hung in a flashback. He stayed 'dead' until he was
dug up - unclear how long, but maybe overnight.

BAD DAY IN BUILDING A - Duncan was fatally shot from behind in the base of the
neck. He was on his feet in less than an hour.

MOUNTAIN MEN - Duncan took a fatal header into a deep ravine. Lots of damage.
This was an over-nighter.

DEADLY MEDICINE - Duncan hit by a car, should have been D.O.A., but wasn't. In
the E.R. twenty minutes later, revived, then walked out.

The SEA WITCH - Duncan hit the water in the flashback and stayed under.

EYEWITNESS - Duncan took two or three bullets, but stayed conscious. On his
feet (and cleaned up) when the cops got there.

AVENGING ANGEL - The crazy guy was killed with a clean knife wound, and I think
he woke up while Duncan was going through his wallet - maybe five minutes.

STUDIES IN LIGHT - Gregor was fatally shot once in the chest. He woke up in the
wagon after Duncan had taken care of the shooter and done some driving.

TURNABOUT - Quentin Barnes [was electrocuted and] stayed buried and 'dead' for
years. 30?

THE DARKNESS - Richie's 'first death', and we didn't see him revive!

THE ZONE - [Duncan was hit on the head and dumped unconscious into the harbor]
Charlie spent half an hour diving for Duncan's body - which wasn't there.

THE RETURN OF AMANDA - Duncan and Amanda both shot in the back, but able to swim
ashore.

RUN FOR YOUR LIFE - Duncan took a fatal shotgun blast to the chest. Unclear how
long he was 'dead'.

[Helva adds: "Yikes! I didn't realize there were that many when I started this
reply. And if I missed some ... Anyway, I think MOUNTAIN MEN is the worst
damage Duncan has taken, and the longest 'down time'. It probably varies with
the dramatic needs first, then 'they' (or we ...) fit the damage level in."]

[From the Editor's reply: "I can also think of a couple: EYE FOR AN EYE -- Annie
Devlin takes a fall from the tenth floor and is chipper enough to attack the
morgue attendant when her body bag is unzipped, probably not much more than an
hour later; and THE WATCHERS -- Duncan was shot in the chest at the end, and
when he came to the place was deserted. And don't forget the part in EPITAPH FOR
TOMMY where they dropped Duncan out a window..."

[from FOR TOMORROW WE DIE: Xavier was caught on a security camera, dying from
his poison gas; the police mention that the tape's timer showed that Xavier was
down for only two minutes. Duncan also recovered from this gas in the flashback
in about that length of time. -- SL

[Late-breaking, from UNHOLY ALLIANCE part I : Duncan was shot in the chest --
right through the heart, according to Charlie -- and still managed to throw
himself down the space at the bottom of an elevator shaft. Probably not out for
more than a couple of minutes, if that... -- SL

[Connor also stabbed himself in the chest to prove his point to Brenda in the
movie, but he barely batted an eye over it, so I'm not sure it counts. -SL]

TOMORROW, THE WORLD...

8888888888888888888888888888888888888888888

BILL O'BRIEN explains the sudden explosion of HIGHLANDER threads in Section Ten
to the bleeding broken body of one of our victims...

>> Out of curiosity, why are there 500 HIGHLANDER threads for every 1 on
anything else?<<

10. We write fast.

9. Everyone else writes slowly.

8. We couldn't all get on a conference call at the same time.

7. We actually communicate with each other instead of just stating positions.

6. We figured out long ago that we wouldn't always agree so we have more to say
to each other.

5. It's better than watching Bo Derek in TARZAN THE APE MAN.

4. We use too many emoticons (:-) so there are more messages.

3. BABYLON-5 hasn't been on the air long enough to establish strong
personalities for any of its characters.

2. The concept of the eternal champion is very old and rife for speculation.

1. We're just a bunch of fun-loving people with sharp axes, knives,
and swords and for some reason we just seem to get away with it.

THEORY UPDATE: the following companion piece to last month's collection of
movie/series reconciliation theories comes in from SHERI RICHARDSON:

Highlander 2 was a dream sequence...I'm sure of it. Had to be.

In knowing and being everything, Connor could certainly *see* all possibilities.
In HL3 he'll wake up in the shower, back at the end of the first movie.

[And the general consensus is, "bad haggis..." -SL]

HIGHLANDER, for those of you just tuning in (the rest of you could skip this
bit), is a television series based somewhat loosely upon a film of the same
name, concerning a man from 1500's Scotland who discovers that he is immortal,
and cannot die. There are others like him, he finds, and they are engaged in a
fight to the last immortal, for the power of the Prize. In the end, there can
be only one.
The movie and the series diverge at this point: in the film, our man is Connor
MacLeod (Christopher Lambert), and he lives at the time of the last days, the
Gathering, when all the remaining immortals are coming together for the fight to
the death.
In the series, however, our immortal hero is Duncan MacLeod (Adrian Paul)--
"Same clan, different vintage" -- and the Gathering is not yet at hand. Duncan's
task is to keep his head from week to week.
For that is the only way to slay an immortal. From any wound but one, even unto
death, they will recover -- but "if your head comes away from your neck, it's
over." So says Connor's immortal mentor, Ramirez (Sean Connery).
