NOTES FROM THE EDITOR'S CAGE

Hi there, welcome to the virtual newsstand. Please don't rob the blind
computer. What you are looking at now is the first chronicle in the continuing
saga of our Compuserve Information Services HIGHLANDER fan club/three-ring-
circus, the Watchers Of CI$. With your help, there will be many more. I'll be
compiling interesting and/or informative HIGHLANDER threads from the SF/Fantasy
Television message boards (Section #10): longer submissions can be E-mailed
directly to me at 73524,43, or in the event you're reading this as a hardcopy
passed along by a friend (HINT HINT folks!), I can also take SnailMail at C/O
Judy Kunz, Kibby Labs, 25235 Dequindre, Madison Heights, MI 48071. Sorry, no
fiction, although *I'd* love to see it privately.

Since I'll be your editor, until they catch me, I'll introduce myself. My name
is Samantha Lynn, I'm 24, and somehow I've ended up lucky enough to have a lot
of spare time on my hands to contemplate the mysteries of HIGHLANDER. I've
started this newsletter because it's easy to lose track of our discussions in
the threads, as they scroll off so quickly, and a library record of previous
business would be a great help to the constant flood of new faces and old
amnesiacs like myself.

HIGHLANDER, for those of you just tuning in (the rest of you could skip this
bit), is a television series based somewhat loosely upon a film of the same
name, concerning a man from 1500's Scotland who discovers that he is immortal,
and cannot die. There are others like him, he finds, and they are engaged in a
fight to the last immortal, for the power of the Prize. In the end, there can
be only one.
The movie and the series diverge at this point: in the film, our man is Connor
MacLeod (Christopher Lambert), and he lives at the time of the last days, the
Gathering, when all the remaining immortals are coming together for the fight
to the death.
In the series, however, our immortal hero is Duncan MacLeod (Adrian Paul)--
"Same clan, different vintage" -- and the Gathering is not yet at hand.
Duncan's task is to keep his head from week to week.
For that is the only way to slay an immortal. From any wound but one, even
unto death, they will recover -- but "if your head comes away from your neck,
it's over." So says Connor's immortal mentor, Ramirez (Sean Connery).

In this, our first issue, I have gathered together some of our theories on how
to reconcile a seemingly insurmountable difference between the film and the
series -- the fact that at the end of "The Highlander," Connor won the Prize,
yet the series takes place *after* the movie.

Also, we have the first draft of a timeline for the HIGHLANDER series. We are
still hard at work filling in the gaps and patching up the contradictions, so
ongoing contributions are not only welcome but essential.

And, as an exercise in, well, exercise, we have an essay on how to defeat an
immortal in a martial arts practice session.

February means Valentine's Day, and just under the wire we've received the text
of a letter that sheds some light on the relationship of Tessa and Duncan. For
all of you spending this day with your Tessa or your Duncan... if you want the
rest of us, we'll be in our burrows, sulking.

Do let me know what you think. My editorial wish list for future issues: an
up-to-date episode list for the series, with *brief* descriptions; essays on
the philosophy of the Watchers and their evil twins, the Hunters; essays on the
psychology of *being* immortal, for example how Duncan seems to handle it; and
entries for a periodical column of "Lost Episodes", the unlikelier the better,
since I can't manage cartoons for us in this format. (Example: "Under The Hill"
-- Duncan busts a ring of immortals who are stealing mortal babies out of
frustration...)

TAKES ON THE GRAND UNIFIED THEORY OF HIGHLANDER

8888888888888888888888888888888888888888888

The most confusing question posed by the HIGHLANDER series is this: if Connor
was the last immortal at the end of the film in 1985, then where did all these
immortals come from in 1993? The following are some attempts at a theory to
reconcile these circumstances.

8888888888888888888888888888888888888888888

The first theory to be posted to the call was TOM KNUDSEN'S:

Here it is. For all those requesting that I repost my *Theory*,
especially the Goddess, I hereby present the complete:

Highlander
Grand Unified Theory (GUT)

It is the year 1329. For centuries The Watchers have been recording
the saga of a race of beings called The Immortals. By careful study, the
Watchers have found out many things about the Immortals. For instance, they
know that in the end "There can be only one" Immortal. They also know that the
final Immortal will be given a great prize. This prize, if it should fall into
the wrong hands, would begin an eternity of horror for all of mankind.
The Immortals are continually fighting each other. It seems that there
is one way to kill an Immortal, to remove his head from his neck. It has been
noticed that some of the Immortals do not look for fights, and sometimes even
form friendships among each other. These Immortals are not looking for power
and glory. They are just trying to survive until the time of the Gathering,
When only a few Immortals are left, they will be drawn to the same place to
fight until only one remains.
Many of the Immortals, always abusing the fact that they cannot die and
constantly trying to win the prize, view humans as lesser creatures. They want
to some day rule over humans and make them do the bidding of the all powerful
final One. If one of these were to win the prize, the world would never break
out of darkness.
That is why a group of the Watchers have decided that something must be
done about these so-called Evil Immortals. They have secretly broken off from
the Watchers and have been looking for a way to turn the tide of the struggle
so that one of the Good Immortals will win the prize.
The Enlightened, as they call themselves, have, for a long time, no
idea how to accomplish their goal. Finally, a young Enlightened named Josa
Barmani discovers that Immortals never fight on Holy ground. This makes sense
for the Good Immortals, who respect the beliefs of humans and in fact sometimes
share those beliefs. What about the Evil Immortals though? What reason do
they have not to fight on Holy Ground?
It is not until Josa's son Branna overhears a conversation between two
Evil Immortals fighting that this makes sense. Apparently, mention is made of
the fact that the Immortals were lucky they were not on Holy Ground, or the
winner would not get the Quickening that is necessary for them to win the prize
if they are the last two Immortals. In fact, an Immortal standing on Holy
ground has been removed from the contest and has all of his power as an
Immortal blocked. An Immortal standing on Holy ground stands "outside the
world" and is not counted towards the Prize. This is why neither the Good nor
the Evil Immortals will fight on Holy ground of any kind. If they were, and
these were the last two left, neither would experience the Quickening or win
The Prize.
The Enlightened use this fact in their plan. They put out the rumor in
the Immortal community that the Gathering is happening now, in 1329, in Japan.
Naturally, many of the Evil Immortals show up looking to win the prize. They
are lured to an underground Shinto temple, rendered unconscious, and placed in
a room constantly filled with carbon monoxide from an underground fissure.
Since they are, unconscious and on Holy ground, they are effectively removed
from the struggle for the Prize. In the end, several hundred Immortals are
captured here. The Enlightened eventually die out and are forgotten as is what
they did.
Over the years, many of the Good Immortals weary of the constant
fighting and seek refuge on Holy ground. Darius is one of these, as is Duncan.
The Watchers found it surprising just how many of these Immortals disappeared
for between 10 and 100 years.
In 1985, Connor McLeod meets the Kurgan in battle. At this time, they
are the last two Immortals left "in the world". When Connor kills the Kurgan,
he receives the Prize. He gains mortality, as well as the ability to read the
thoughts of everyone on the planet. This goes on for several years. Connor is
able to defuse many of the world's problems and is probably also responsible
for the breakup of Communism.
Sometime towards the end of the 80's Connor finds he can no longer read
thoughts and is healing very quickly from injuries. He knows something is
wrong. He goes to visit his cousin Duncan, who is living in a monastery with
his friend Darius. It seems Duncan is thinking about starting a relationship
with a human woman and has been here since 1984 trying to decide what to do.
He is not certain that he wants to put himself through the hell he knows he
will eventually face. In the end he decides that Tessa is worth it, and brings
her to the United States.
Duncan and Connor find out that an earthquake in Japan has ruptured the
underground temple, after much research and travelling. The trail of all the
Evil Immortals they meet leads directly to Japan. The Evil Immortals are
escaping one by one as the oxygen from the atmosphere reaches them and allows
them to awake. Duncan and Connor put the word out to all the known Good
Immortals to come out of hiding to make sure that no evil Immortal will claim
the Prize.
In the end, there can be only One. This time there will be no
Immortals to come out of hiding and start the cycle again.

[As first posted except I cleaned out the grutched-up bit --SL]

8888888888888888888888888888888888888888888

Theory #2 was my own:

All right, then, here are my versions of a general theory-theme:

THE STARTING POINT:
Connor and the Kurgan were the last of the Immortals, and Connor won the Prize.

VERSION #1 -- THE DELUXE MODEL

Connor received all the power the average Supernatural Being would need to get
started on a very profitable little career as a god.
But wait -- part of the Prize, for Connor, was *mortality*. So, when a god
dies... what happens to all that power?
I would venture so far as to say that perhaps the entire universe exploded, and
started again. Similar, but a teensy bit different.

VERSION #2 -- THE ECONOMY MODEL

Or maybe not that drastic -- maybe all the little bits of the quickening got
flung up and down Time, like little seeds, and made immortals of whoever they
landed in...

VERSION #3 -- THE Z-WORD!!

Completists will point out that, yes, there exists in our version of the
universe a film entitled "HIGHLANDER 2 -- THE QUICKENING". All right, ya
little boogerheads, I can work that in too:

At the beginning of H2, Connor has grown old. BUT, when he kills the little
flying guy from Zeiss, he receives a Quickening and becomes immortal again.
This discharge of energy causes a Theory #2 effect.

The beauty of this is that it means that in the series-universe Immortals do
not come from Zeiss. (Except Connor, but then maybe *that's* what that blasted
accent is...)

[The reply from Helva Peters:

ROFL!!! Someone finally found a redeeming quality in The Sickening!
Best explanation yet for Connor's accent! Bravo!]

8888888888888888888888888888888888888888888

Theory #3 came in from RAY THE HIGHLANDER:

Err, well, my theory is :-

Someone wrote the movie, it was a huge success. They thought 'Hey, let's make
another one and make more money again!': they tried, but the writer was on
drugs when he wrote it.

They sent the writer to the drugs rehab centre. Later, when he had recovered,
they thought they could make money by making a series instead, as then they
would get repeat fees!

Well, it's just a rough idea...

8888888888888888888888888888888888888888888

Theory #4, presented by NATHAN BREMER:

--}Theory #0001-NB, Mark I, Mod. 0{--

The movie stands as written, up to and including Connor receiving the Kurgan's
quickening. However, some clarifications-

For a race that is centuries born and dying, it seems unlikely that the
Gathering would be over with in a few days/weeks. The movie actually
chronicles only the fight for the Prize among the first group of Immortals to
reach New York.

When the Kurgan says he and Connor are the only ones left, he refers to their
being the only ones left of the first group (It is also possible that Kurgan
means he considers them the only serious contenders left {but just mentioning
this possibility will probably bring me a lot of grief from all the females who
prefer Duncan over Connor <g>}).

As other Immortals sense that the time of the Gathering is nigh, and divine the
location where it is to take place, more will arrive. But again, someone who
lives for centuries probably won't be bothered if they don't show up until a
few years have passed.

Ok, so Connor takes the Kurgan's head. He is then assaulted by the Quickening
of one of the "oldest and most powerful of the Immortals"-Ramirez. This
Quickening, which is not only the most powerful but also the most evil one
Connor has experienced, severely traumatizes his psyche and drives him mad,
albeit slowly at first. His delusions start with the belief that he has won
the Prize and is now mortal, which he conveys to Brenda. However, it goes
downhill from there. Connor insists on moving to the deserts of the American
Southwest, where he starts to believe that Global Warming is a serious and
immediate threat that he must defend against. Brenda eventually decides there
is nothing she can do to help him, and leaves him (her fate is currently
unknown). In his tortured mind, Connor believes that in one of life's cruel
twists he has lost one last love to the grave. These and his other delusions
have all been documented (why I don't know) in a second film.

Connor's hallucinations eventually bring him back to the city. During his
absence, more Immortals have Gathered. The repeated sensing of these Immortals
slowly brings Connor back to reality. He learns his kinsman Duncan is living
in the city, and eventually their paths cross. From that point on the events
of Duncan's life have been chronicled in a TV series. The whereabouts of
Connor are currently unknown.

--}Theory Ends{--

8888888888888888888888888888888888888888888

And theory #5, posted by CLAUDE:

Goddess, about the only theory I can come up with is that
a) I am giving the producers, actors, writers, and directors the
benifit of the doubt, and assuming that the second movie was some strange
nightmare that I had after staying up too late with too much M[ountain] Dew.
b) The Series takes place _before_ the first movie. We have to
politely ignore any references to dates in the movie (recent dates), and Joe
Dawson's database contained an error. Connor and the Kurgan fought, but Connor
did not really win. The watchers _thought_ he won, but he really didn't. They
meet again in a couple of years after the series ends (the near future), and
duke it out for the final time.

[Well, so far it looks like we have three votes for Convoluted Circumstances
and three for Human/Immortal Error (Nathan claims both). Research, obviously,
must continue. -SL]

HOW I'D FIGHT DUNCAN MACLEOD FOR FUN AND PROFIT

8888888888888888888888888888888888888888888

BEN ROBERTO tells us how he would approach the problem of taking on Duncan in a
practice match:

Okay....Since I'm only 5'7" (short enough), I'll be his sparring partner:

I'd stand very relaxed, no posturing (posturing is one of the signs of a
beginner), hands relaxed at my sides, maybe with my left side slightly facing
Duncan. And then I'd let him make the first move. Assuming he never leads with
a kick (which is a very slow opening move, COUNTERING his opening move with a
kick is a different matter, more on that later if you like...), he might try a
hand strike of some kind. I would duck or shift sideways to avoid the strike
and kick his lead leg before he has a chance to reset. I would kick his thigh
or calf. I wouldn't attack his knee since this is a practice match. My tactic
would be to stay low, attacking his base. The strikes would need to be precise
(pressure points along the leg, the rib cage area near his arm pit, the base of
his spine, kidney areas, and the solar plexus (which BTW is very difficult to
hit properly)). Attacking the areas above the sternum would [be] impractical
until I brought him to his knees. Throws would work also since I'm shorter than
him.

BUT...

He's obviously a disciplined fighter. He won't make a move unless moved upon.
Or unless he sees someone he cares about in trouble. If you remember in EYE
FOR AN EYE and REVENGE OF THE SWORD, Duncan never made the first move. He
always countered. His opponent's first move doesn't need to be a gross
movement. All it takes for an opening is a commitment of movement such as: A
shift of weight from one foot or the other; leading or drawing back with a
shoulder; etc.

That's not to say he wouldn't throw a feint of some kind to get the opponent to
make a move.

[Thank you, Ben! Next week: we visit Ben in the hospital to ask how well it
worked. :) -SL]

FOREVER...

Since it's Valentine's Day, here's a look into Tessa and Duncan's relationship.
HELVA PETERS writes:

"When Duncan told Richie to sell the Antique Shop, Tessa's artwork could not be
sold with it, as it was not their joint property. So Richie had to hang on to
it, along with her Macintosh, which had the records for the artwork on it.
While Richie is hacking around on her Mac, he finds this file:"

-------------------------------------------------

Dear Duncan,

Usually I believe we understand everything that needs to be understood between
us, and more, but there are times when I'm not so sure. These are things I
think you know, but I need to put them 'down on paper'.

We have been together for twelve wonderful years, but now your past - who you
are and what you are - has caught up with us. You must now face dangers that
are new to me and, like the loving, caring, gentle man you are, you want to
protect me from them.

You have said that no matter how many centuries go by, every loss leaves you
naked and alone. And yet you are willing to put yourself through that loss
again for me. You have also said that I am the most wonderful woman you have
ever known. How can you believe that and expect me to offer you less than you
offer me? How can you think that I would let you face that pain alone?

You are the strongest person I have ever known, but no one is strong enough to
face life completely alone - not even a short life. I would rather face your
dangers with you than face my life without you, and you need someone to share
this part of your life.

I know you have shared with others before, and I pray that you will outlive me
and go on to love again and again. But for now, please share with me.
Everything. For as long as we are.

I Love You,
Tessa
