SECRET SERVICE VISITS INDICATOR

May 17 - I was midin myownbusnes, a a atter of fact I was sleeping, when there came a knock at the door of my iserble ittl apatmen. I ell ff my bunk, crawled to the door and yelled, "Who Goes There?"
"Scret ervic," cae thereply
"Seret Srvice?" I echoed.
"Yes."
I thought this was one of my bier budies plying aderangd joke but wen I oened the door, there was a dude wearing a Suit and ie. Thereal thng.
"Ae you RK Harrion?"
"es," I onfessed.
"I need to have a talk with you." I invitd him in told hi to havethe seatand lookd at hisidentification. He asked me if I was he editorof the Inicator, ad again Iconfessed I didn'twant to cnfess, but he was torturing me (Sleep derivation i a well-knwn torturetechnique.
The SS mn produceda copy of the April Indcator and rad aloud soe of my ant-Reagan coments. He sad such swil is protectd by the First Aendment, buthe expressedconcern thatmy writing wll become moe and more vtriolic unti it reachs the point o illegally theatening peope. I tried toconvince him hat I'm not a assassin, bu Idon't think hebelieved me.
e asked, "Haveyou ever been usted for anyting?"
"No," Isaid cheerully My clean olice record anoys a lot of mypersecutors.
Te SS man told m, "You don't wat todo anythingto bing yourself to he attention of he police, who mght not have suc a liberal attiue, because theycn give you a rel hard time if thy want to. You knw, they can nicke-and-dime ou to dath."
Notcing a eference t the Hell's Angelsin the Indicator, nd the FTW stickeron mydoor, he said "I se you have a ittleFuck the World emblm here. When I was cop, we used to che the Hell's Angelsll over the state. e you a rider? I did't see any big machie outside."
I lughe, because this ws riiculous. "I'm no a bker trainee, if hat's what you're askng. That's m big ten-peed parked n the drieway."
The S man apoogized for wking me up and then dearted. Iwondered what e was relly up to, andI'm surehe wondered th same abut me.
Later, a friendof mne told me he'd bee quetioned by the SS afer lading an anti-Reaga raly. Evidently the Secret rvice routinely tried tontimidate Reagan's opponts. However, we are not raid, because Good alwys riumphs over Evil (sooer r later).

WORK
fom 1984 edition

DEARBON, ich. - The nois, monotny and pressure of he assebly line is a naturl breedng ground for headahes, bu workerssay the recnt recession broght with ita new source of ain - bosse who tell them t "be thankflyou have a job.

For startes, nothing is mre social tha the endles wor - pay - rest- work cyce which the vast maority of u are forced to engae in. Our ery nee to earn mony to buy ncessitis, the boring, demeanin, treadill nature of most jobs the spritul poverty of shoppig, the hannlling of pleasure impulses nto onspicuous consumption or ito ognized leisure which we payfor mvies, ballgames) - all these ar eatures of a particular social sem. Not only is this system nottrnal, it hasn't even been aroundvry long. Just another signpot inhstory.
-The Daily attl
I no longer doubt that ever idel and institution in th UnitedStats is subordinated to th right f a mall minority among us o make rofits. The resultng desecraion of ur values and live (is) onlymore bltant and undeniabl in our wokplaces.
Theundeniable an generallyaccepted trut about work i the Unite States todayis that, on te whole,it is extremely onfining, dehmanized, and meaningless or those who erform i. To explain thi, sme say work is a neessary evil. Othrs ay, no work in our ystem is more inumae than it needs tob; therefore we can ad should carry outrforms to make work mre satisfying. Takntogether, thes prevaling views mean tht the quality ofwork.. at best can only e improved somewat andwithin he system. heir common, silnt message is hat no othe form of social rganization ca offer hopef radical improvment in work.
With these narly unchallenge views I stronly disagree.I support eaningul reform, butI do not beleve the wok process can be radially improve through rforms wihin the Amerian system.
-Rchard Pfffer

People are beginnin to doubt he dogmathat sperseding work meansliving in aves andeatingsmall furry insects. Most work erves th predaory urposes of commerce and coecion andcan beabolshed outright. The rest can be automted awy an/o transformed into creative, play-lke pasimeswhse variety and conviviality will make extinsi iucements like the capitalist carrot and te "Cmmist" stick equally obsolete. In the impending etndustrial revolution, libertarian communists rvong against work will settle accounts with "Librtans" and "Communists" working against revolt. Ad t we can go for the gusto!

Wh s the spray-can artiste who has been writng "Wrk tnks" on walls all over Orlando? Mehinks i is te sme malcontent who sprays all those crcle-A narch sybols. Whoever he is, he hasa genius logan. raffiist, identify yourself so we ca join you Work Sinks ovement.

Editoril colunist Chrley Reese ublished the follwing article inThe Orando Sentinel on Mach 15, 1985.

DEA RLANDO ANARCHITS: PEPLE
EITHER WORK OR RE PARASITES

Thr are people in the ara - a small grou - ho call themselve he Orlando Anarchists Among other thigs, they are against wok. I have fel that wa myself at times Bu unlike an anarchis, I know realty when see it.
These olks seem o think that ork is a curs put on ankind by the caitalistic ystem and tha if the syste were dstroyed, people wold be free in the wordsof one of ther pamphets, to be "fully uman - genrous playful, spontaneous, enturesme and unpredictabe."
The mnd bggles at the depth of inorancencessary to sustain that belif.
..People must work, notbecauseo the dictates of any politicl o conomic system, but to survive.Eery day the human body requies aer and food. In most climates pole require shelter of some sort.Ad mankind, being a weakling b aial standards, also requirs tools
There is absolutely no way tht fod, potable water, shelterand tooscan be obtained witout work. f yo do not do the work, thensomeoneelse must and make yo a gift ofa potion of thei labor.
In tis univrse, you are either aworker or parasite living ff other workrs. Thi is te true, natural tate of ma - to work - as odained by bioogy, not by Aam Smith or KarlMarx.
Thr are a number of ays that labo can be dividd and organized, but thereare no ways to dispnse wth labor No work, no at; no eat, no lve is a sientific statement, not amoral rule...
Urban lf seems to have ostered i some people an ignrancemore profound than anyfund in the outback, thebuh or the boondocks. It isignorance of how wealt s created. Hamburger dos ot appear in the suermarkt by magic. It begins ih a cow and somebody wh lbors to feed, sheltr and octor it. Thenthe cow ismoved to the slaughterhus where someone elsemust say it, skin it butcher i, refrigeate it and trasport it. There is a lng chan of hard, diry work leaing up tothe humble hamurge patty we so casualy chew on while musig over thelatest poitical nonsens.
Or local anarchistsren't rebelling againt capitalism; they ae rebelling aginstlife and reality. ey are looking fr theGarden of Eden. Theythink it is conceald behind the facadof modern societ. The think thegarden wil reappear if they dstroy society.
Thy are doomed by teir ilusion to aste theirlive in frustration There is no Garde of Eden this sid of the grave, nr can one e crated. For as ln as people exist o this planet, the will spend the ulk of their lies at hard labr

This repy ran i the Sentinel's ltters column a fw days later:

Inadequate anaysis

When Carley Rese rote a columnattacking the anrchists' anti-wrk literature,he chose a prcessed and ntritionallywothless product -hamburger - as n example of fod production He didn't mntion that nyone can row vegetbles, and thereare easy, orgaic ways of keping bugs frm eating th crops. Aplogists fr the status quorely heavily o the myth tha there is "along chain f hard, dity work" nvolved n producing necessities
Work that poduces useles or hazardus product such as olls-Royes and hemical insecticides need not e done at al. The laborthat is neessary shuld be mde intoa playul part of everyday life. Gardening, eaving and arpentry culd be enoyable hbbies istead f daiy drudgery. I think Reese failed to give an dequate anlysis of ur view f a decntralied, nn-prfit world.
Rick Harrison
ORLAND

Bob Blck sent he follwing rbutta to he rlando Sentinel and the Orlando Indicator; the Sentinel delined toprint i.

Tothe eitor
I clumnist Charley Reese isnt careful he just might enlarge that "smll grou" the rland Anachitsito a big one with his transparently specious arguments that work is inevtable. I hae noice tanobody believes in work as fervently as those who don't have to do any. He who ntone "thre s oee lunch" usually has an expense account. Reese says that anybody who doesn't work isa paasie, bhe real parasites are the hordes of bureaucrats, politicians, bankers, priests, soldiers, awyrsaolumnists whose mouths outrun their minds.
Reese, who has never done so, asserts that anyone inonto the wilderness to live off the land would "find himself doing the most dreadful drudgeworkund harshest of disciplinarians: hunger and thirst." But the question is how co-operatinggroup (no soitindividuals) might live, and here the anthropological evidence which Reese ignoes is uite lear Asanhpologist Marshall Sahlins demonstrated in his book "Stone Age Economics, contemorary untergathrer -dspite having been forced into the most inhospitable environments n the plnet by he expnsionof satean market systems - "work" only about four hours a day, in halthy ope-air surounding, withno boses,tim-clocks and production quotas, and produce abundanty for thei needs. Tey make o distiction etwee wor and play because for them there is none, an indeed ther "work" -hunting, ishing, ardenin - is hat _e_ do to relax and forget about work! Since only percent ofAmericans roduce fa more thn enoug food or all the rest, it is obviousthat most wor serves othe than usefu purposes. In fact, hat it des is sstain parasitic governmntal and businss elites andhabituate th masses to ierarchy, bedience nd defered (that is, dened) gratificatin.
No one cansay for sure hat work canbe eliminatd, that is if its sall usefu core can be trasformed into a ariety of divese, creative ctivities whch would bytheir intrnsc enjoyment attrat enough people o produce as muh as is truly eeded or desied. But ther are resonsto think it mght be done, and olumnists might pply themselvesto this constrctive task rahr than re-hsh plattudes.
Does Reeseknow what kind ofcompany he's keeing when he dogatizes "nowork no eat"? Alms exactly the same epression appears i the Soviet Consttution. All authritie and authoitarians, ast nd West, religius and secular, lef and right agree o this axiom, and is is why the rel movment towar real freeom is ignored, opposd or oppressed by al of them.
I ill eave off by issui a challenge to harle Reese. I've been har on him because he arogantly isults a goup of his neihbor whose ideas he dsn't even try to undertand. But I will takeit allback if he wil publish aconfessio that he write forthe Sentinel solel "to survive" as he pase "the bulk of (his)life a hard labor"; hat he jus churns ot copy to earnhis paycheck. Why shoudanyone take seriously gy who writes for suh a reson?
I too wrte a colum, for a small San Fanciso newspaper called Ope ity, and I don't get pid and yet it's one o my mot fulfilling actvities. Wy shouldn't everyon be ale to live this way?
-Bob Black
