Cyber Journal issue 1

The Cyber Journal
issue #1
November 26,1992

The Cyber Journal: What is it?

Well The Cyber Journal is exactly what it says, a breeding ground for
knowledge and expression that is kept isolated. We [The Dark Regime] have
decided that the knowledge we have and the skills we possess should be
shared, but shared by the Elite only. This issue is a 'test' issue to see
how it works out. Some of you may remember "Phrack Magazine" or "The Remote
Informer", and some other very good newsletters. This is a similar
newsletter, but we would like to add something special to it [to be
discussed at a later date]. The paper contains articles of any kind relating
to the art of Phracking (Phreaking or Hacking). Some of the information you
may already have, but remember others may be learning yet, and if the paper
takes off, the paper will contain many more articles, diversifying the paper
to both the advanced and the beginners. We will not be the only authors,
this paper belongs to ALL, every phreaker in the world has a part in this
newsletter. We will accept articles, and chances are, since the newsletter
is just starting out, they will be included. You will recieve full credit,
and we will edit it as little as possible. [Freedom of speech rules in Cyber
Space]. As to how to submit, well one of us can be found on several bulletin
boards. If we are not on your local Elite board, you probobly know of
someone who is on a board that we are on also. We will eventually have a
stationary board, but for now just circulate the articles, we will find them,
don't worry about that. The layout is very informal (as you can see). If the
journal can take off, the format will become more structured. For the first
issue I will just do some articles of my own, basic stuff to get the ball
rolling.

White Box (Portable Unit, and frequency table)

Basically, all a White Box does is turn a normal touch-tone keypad into
a portable unit. This portable unit does nothing more than your normal
touch-tone phone does. (Unless you hook it upto a Silver Box). First, you
must understand how a touch-tone phone works. When you press a button
(emit a tone), the tone is actually a tone comprised of two frequencies
(thats where M-F or Multi-Frequency comes from).

Before we start:
The normal power required by a keypad is 25V. Although it will work on as
little as 15V, allowing us to use 2 9V batteries for power. We also need
to improvise with an appropriate transformer due to the fact we wont use
a 9-OHM speaker (needed for adequete volume).

Part List:

(1) Touch-Tone Keypad
(1) miniature 1000 to 8 OHM transformer
(Radio Shack part #273-1380)
(1) standard 8-OHM speaker
(2) 9V batteries
(2) 9V battery clips
(1) case to put it all in (optional)

Instructions: (from Jolly Rogers Cookbook)
1- Connect the red wire from the transformer to either trminal on the
speaker.
2- Connect the white wire from the transformer to the other terminal on the
speaker.
3- Connect the red wire from one battery clip to the black wire on the other
battery clip.
4- Connect the red wire from the second battery clip to the green wire from
the keypad.
5- Connect the blue wire from the keypad to the orange/black wire from the
keypad.
6- Connect the black wire from the first battery clip to the two above wires
(blue and black/orange).
7- Connect the black wire from the keypad to the blue wire from the
transformer.
8- Connect the red/green wire from the keypad to the green wire from the
transformer.
9- Make sure the black wire from the transformer and the remaining wires
from the keypad are free.
10- Stick in the batteries (and your all set to go)!

You now have a touch-tone phone! (A White Box). Now stick the pad next to
the reciever of the phone and dial! Thats all there is to it.
(I will give a modification box to the White Box in a future issue:
the Silver Box).

Here are the Frequencies emitted by the normal touch-tone pad.

Frequency Table: (Cross-Grid set-up)

1 1 1
2 3 4
0 3 7
9 6 7

697 (1) (2) (3)
770 (4) (5) (6)
851 (7) (8) (9)
941 (*) (0) (#)

So using our model pressing a (1) emits 697 Hz + 1209 Hz (M-F).

Well thats it, have fun!

Special thanks to Jolly Roger, Anarchist, and others who have written
about the White Box and frequency lists.

The Beige Box

The Beige Box is as well, a simple device which turns you into an authentic
phone man! It let's you take your phone, and hook it to someone elses line.
(Think of the endless possibilities!) Construction is simple and inexpensive
(and no need to even take apart the phone).

Parts:
(1) Phone cord
(2) Alligator clips
(maybe some plyers and tape)

Construction:

1- Remove one end of the protective casings from the phone wire (use the
plyers, unless you know a good dentist).
2- You now have 4 wires looking at you: red, green, yellow, and black. Tape
back the black and yellow wire, as you wont be needing them this project.
3- Attach an alligator clip to each the red and the green wire (and label
them).
4- Plug the other end into your phone and your ready to go!

What now!?

Well, the most obvious use is to goto the back of your neighbors house, get
into that little box in the back, and hook your clips to the phone leads.
You are now on their line, and they don't even know it! (Time to call
long distance and have fun!) But there are much more constructive uses like
going to a Bell Switching apparatus, and having fun there too. (It is also
imperitive when using loop lines [more on that later] ).

Thats about it, so have fun, and don't get caught!

The Future for The Dark Regime

Well The Dark Regime [us] has a lot in store for the world in the future.
We are basically a new group, and have formed from being independent
phrackers to a group. This unity has brought many good ideas, and has
concieved this newsletter. We will continue this newsletter as long as the
Elite want it around. If we get no response, we will consider it dead, and
go somewhere else with our ability. So please, is you want this newsletter
to be real, contribute, and voice your opinions, good or bad! Besides this
newsletter The Dark Regime has the following in store for the future:

DarkPhrack: The Amiga Phrack System
[ A true Amiga Phrack system including schematics, advanced terminals,
and hardware based phrack utilities.
Coming early spring of 1993 ]

The Spellbook
[ A tomb of our knowledge compiled with your input. An encyclopedia for
phrackers across the world.
Coming February of 1993 ]

Well thats it for now, let us know your feelings and opinions (and
contributions of knowledge i.e. files of your work, letters, etc.)
