It's the biggest burrito in the world!
ANAHEIM, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 31, 1995--At 11:11 a.m. Monday,
Raymond Perry, president of El Pollo Loco restaurants, signaled to more than
240 `burrito engineers` to begin building the World's Largest Burrito.

A mere 26 minutes and 31 seconds later, the last tortilla was tucked and the
final touch of sauce added to complete a fast-food behemoth that snaked its
way over 3,100 feet of Arrowhead Pond parking lot and weighed in at 4,217
pounds.

The wacky event was put together by coordinating sponsors El Pollo Loco -- a
popular Southern California-based fast food chain specializing in healthy,
flame-broiled Mexican-style chicken -- and the Anaheim Splash -- first place
holders in the Southern Division of the Continental Indoor Soccer League --
to raise money for Olive Crest Homes and Services for Abused Children.

`Sure it's a fun event,` said Perry, `but the bottom line is that it's
raising both money and awareness for an organization that deals with the
needs of some very special children. I think the number of companies that
have come out here on a 90-degree Monday morning to lend their support shows
how important we all view the work of Olive Crest.`

After its completion, the burrito's weight, length and edibility were
declared `official` by representatives from the County of Orange Surveyor's
[C]ontinue, [N]onstop, [S]top, [P]revious? [C]Department and the Chair of Chapman University's Food cience and Nutrition
Department. Following verification of the vital statistics, each took a bite
out of a few feet that had been prepared at a nearby food station in order to
meet the county's requirements for public distribution. Actual tasting of the
burrito is required by the Guinness record guidelines, to ensure authenticity
and edibility.

Once the officials had completed their important task of tasting the burrito,
the documentation -- signed by an certified notary -- was overnighted to
London, England to make an August 3 deadline for inclusion in the
supplemental section of the 1996 Guinness Book of World Records. The section,
called `Extra! Extra!` is for those records that are created or broken
in-between the printing of each year's issue. `Loco` for a good cause

`We had thought about pulling this off earlier in the year, but at that time
we naively gave ourselves a week to put it together,` said El Pollo Loco vice
president of marketing Lou Franson. `After making a few phone calls, we
realized there is a reason these things are called World Records: they take a
lot of work and they are big -- really big!`

The beneficiary of the fundraiser, Olive Crest Homes and Services for Abused
Children, was founded in 1973 by Dr. Donald Verleur and his wife Lois. With
[C]ontinue, [N]onstop, [S]top, [P]revious? [C]its 20 group homes, Olive Crest offers care and refugefor abused, abandoned
and neglected children found in Orange County and in other Southern
California counties.

`We were overwhelmed with the idea,` said Olive Crest spokesperson, Dorothy
Fitzgerald. `It is heartening when so many companies can come together and
combine fun with a commitment to give back to the community. We are extremely
grateful, not to mention we can now say we've helped build the biggest
burrito in the world!`

To raise funds, El Pollo Loco arranged for sections of the burrito to be sold
as sponsorships. In return, the sponsors received lunch, T-shirts, free food
coupons, tickets to Splash games and a commemorative 8x10 photo. What to do
with 4,000 pounds of burrito

The Orange County Department of Health wouldn't allow the burrito to be
handed out for consumption, no matter how fresh the ingredients. So the
question was: what to do the food?

That answer was to bring in the company that hauls food waste from the
chain's restaurants everyday, and have it do the same for the burrito.

`I think Baker Commodities was a little surprised when we called,` said
Franson. `It's not every day we request the pick-up of a 3,100-foot burrito.
We made it clear, though, that nothing could go to waste. They told us that
by processing the burrito into feed for livestock, we could be assured of 100
percent reuse.`

Just How Long Is It? If placed on end, the burrito would be:

-- More than twice the height of the Empire State Building,

which is 1,414 feet tall.

-- Almost 52 times the height of the Arrowhead Pond. And, it's:

-- Longer than 10 football fields placed end-to-end Just How Big Is It?

-- This burrito is so huge that its weight equals 7,103 regular

size beans, rice and cheese burritos!

-- The Kia Sportage, the official `cool` sports utility

[C]ontinue, [N]onstop, [S]top, [P]revious? [C]vehicle of the world's largest burrito, weighs 3,280 punds --

that is 937 pounds less than the burrito! Serious Burrito Building:

-- Special, super-heavy-duty tortillas were hunted down after a

logistics team of burrito experts determined that heavier tortillas

were needed to handle the demanding twists and curves. The

tortillas are a whopping 13` in diameter and 5 ounces each.

-- `Test run` burritos of 25 and 100 feet were coordinated to

determine the correct ratio of food and tortillas needed to

accomplish this awesome feat.

-- 387 tables were required to hold the largest burrito in the

world.

[C]ontinue, [N]onstop, [S]top, [P]revious? [C]-- The previous record is a burrito constructed in Monebello,

Calif., weighing in at 3,960 pounds and measuring 3,055 feet. -0-

El Pollo Loco, owned by Flagstar Companies Inc., currently operates more than
200 franchised and company-owned restaurants in California, Nevada, Arizona,
