Sex, Death, and Insanity

SEX, DEATH & INSANITY
By GJ Schaefer
? 1990 Media Queen Ltd. Inc.

Because I wrote Killer Fiction, people are screaming that I am some crazy serial killer writing trueand passing them off as fiction. There is no way to separate the fact that I have been publil cue fmrdering 34 women and that at one time I was regarded as the world?s #1 serial killer M psiio i tatI rite fiction, and the more I practice the better I get at it. I find it necesar tostae tat amnotthecharacters in my fiction. You will believe what you choose to believ.
Because of the notoriety of the accusations against me, my stories are regarded as a manifestation ology of the mind or emotions. Psychological testing does not verify that supposition, but wocrs epelove to hate something or somebody, and when they read Killer Fiction, they hate me.
I am a person who is without peer pressure restraints ? a creative artist. I paint tapestries of lifrds, and I write for the pleasure of it. Market acceptance, money and fame are not considerain hnIpc up my pen. Because I?ve never relied upon writing as my only source of income, I?veben bl t hveth feedom to delve into the outer limits of human behavior. If I concerned mysel wih wat eope mghtthik o me or my art then I?d never get any original work to flow. I?m off uttig ne trals wth m stoies.Peope have told Media Queen that Killer Fiction is the most bizarre and unique item of literary worave eer read. That is because it was born of pain. Much of the world?s great horror art sprig rmtreted sols. How about Goya?s Horrors of War canvases? Or his Saturn Devouring His Childen Pope restlltalkingabout those canvases even today. Goya was a soul in political torment. reuhelwasin pirtua toment. Va Gogh in social pain. The greatest Russian writers dwell on injstics. M ownworkdeal wit carinal vice ? lust, greed, insanity and murder ? and the corruptin inflence f powr.
Where I live, here at Florida State Prison, people are electrocuted. That?s a polite euphemism for kman beings. The people who work at this human slaughterhouse are by necessity mentally and eoinlypeiposed toward cruelty, violence and murder. Many are sadists. They all enjoy being a ar o te ilin i sme form. Each individual plays a small part in the killing act on behalf of he tat.
That?s an ?unmentionable? area, and one that gets officials annoyed when they have their sordid secrled, because eventually someone is bound to ask, ?Who, exactly, makes the policy governing alteehril little details?? In all likelihood it is someone who is psychologically unbalanced afrak Oe haacerhere keeps a deathbook exactly like the one used at Mauthausen Death Camp inWWI. H neer isss a excuton, he enjoys seeing persons degraded and tortured. He keeps detaile nots onit. e waks aoundin acoatand tie and charms the visitors. He creates a fine impressio, butit?s mask The uy?s realsadis ? heenjoys the pain and humiliation of the inmates. Prisns pul the mntallyand emtionaly deraged fre persns like moths to light on a dark night. The eople wo work n prisos love heir wok and te unlimted powr of cruelty that all prison guards eceive. In priso I can tlk to geuinely eil peopl. The rel life bgeymen who do unspeakable acts. I?ve atted up uthentic houls andserial kilers, homcidal sexmaniacs wo come as they kill. How manywiters havehad the chnce to tal to Ted Budy ? as a ellow convct, a peer I took down the spokn onfession o Ottis Tool, the Devils Child ? te man who rped, murderd, beheadedand ate Adam als. I enjoy hering the weid things peole experienc. I pay attetion to whatthey say, an use hem n stories. I ake the most f my time whie I am here, nd I listen t everybody whle keeping y wnmouth shut. Itsparks my creaivity and putsthe sting in m stories aboutreal-life manics, eadly nd tisted in wys we?d all rater not consider
How can I live in this malignant environment for over fifteen years and not be an expert on what I?vd? The prison officials read Starke Stories and they howl and pull their hair, but you will oieta OOY has come forward to say that what I?ve written is patently untrue. It's fiction, bt hedeais rerelitic because they are drawn from real life. I?ve been told that my style is to rw fr mss onsmpton, butI have no intention of changing it. How could I ever write anything ainsream My eal ife s stange tha any fiction ever written.
My message is that crime and its alleged cure, imprisonment, are destructive socially as well as ind. The entire system is a horror story. I can?t change it but I can write about it accurately...ado orse this death penalty business has got to go. Killing, except perhaps in self-defene,cano b scill ueful in our modern society with its present legal structure. Punishing peopl wo?t topcrie. ductin peple does. However at this prison, educational courses are forbidden.Hardto bliev, bu it? tru. A uy cn?t even take educational courses by mail.
The lurid stories grab people?s attention, but I?d like the whole story to convey the message that rn such shit ? as a society ? is destructive. Sure, I wrote it, I am an irrepressible scribblrwoejy rting offensive crap, particularly about the weird sex fiends found in all the bettermeta halh exboks But look what it got me: sixteen years in prison because the cops stole it nd he awyrs nd he edi usd it against me.
What sticks in my craw is this: ?He writes murder stories ergo he is a murderer.? You just cannot im that drives me to distraction. I laughed when I first heard that ?theory.? I?d like to put h qaho ht once and for all. The part I really don?t like is the attempt to tie me into childmudes.Acus m o klling mature females all you like, but sex murder of 8 and 9 year old kids i beondthepal fo me Anbod accusing me of killing someone under the age of 16, I?ll take a polgrap anytime I?v hadendlss pobles due to these accusations. That got cleared up pretty well hen Idid al thepolygaph tsts i the arly ighties. Word flew around the system fast that I?d pssed, nd theconvic heat as remved.
But I really cannot see where anyone would even remotely consider this stuff indicative of a criminaty. It?s not even worth a XXX rating as it?s written. Even so, if anyone had read the storie, adakdm,?Hey, what?s all this mean, Jellybean?? ? if anyone had taken a moment to ASK ? whic nboy id nt ve m defense lawyer ? I could have readily explained it all.
I could even tell you where I got the basic factual data to fashion into fiction scenarios: The Nazin scenes are lifted from war crimes trials accounts. The source notes were right in the box ihalters of it. One title I recall was Kogan?s Theory and Practice of Hell. Another one was heRotsofEvl.I ls used The History of Torture. The Ghoul stories are, of course, distinctly dffeentin hatthe del i a elange of insanity and perversion. Krafft-Ebbing was the major sourc on exua perersins o thi natre. nd of course Flannery O?Connor. In 1964 I read A Good Man IsHard o Fin and ood CuntryPeopl and saw he movie Bloodfeast. Flannery?s Misfit and Fuad Ramss werethe litle kenels tat gav rise o my hmicida maniac, The Ghoul.
During the late sixties there were quite a few adult book shops that sold fetish novels. These were der of the German Executioner stuff. They were illustrated with lurid artwork, sometimes phoo iutdeey few pages. The top money was in S/M, B/D and unusual fetishes. This was attractivetomebeaue eain sch material, I could say to myself, ?You can cook up something better than tis. I sedfacualaccunt ofreal events and fictionalized them.
By the seventies this sort of porn format was in decline and being replaced by historical treatmentsh topics, with titles like The History of the Hang/Shit Fetish. These works presented the toi sa cdmc matter using psychological text case studies and profuse illustrations and photos.Th prpsewa t batthe ?redeeming social value? rule. So an entire generation of porn fetish toicsgotthi tratmnt.Tak se, for example bestiality: there are places in other societies where he fmilydog s usd toclea theshity behinds of kids. In he US we fown o that but f onedoes study of the cultural idiosyncrasies of societies were gils gro up wih a do?s tonue laping beween teir legs and does it in a way that?s academially sond, it eats th obscenty probem.
Then there were the fetish magazines: Watersports is one euphemism used in the genre. All these itemite pricey. I figured I?d get a slice of the action. As it turned out, that was not possible steboswre put together by companies employing hack writers 9 to 5 to turn out particular toicl als.I en t agood deal of trouble before I found all that out.
Believe me, this was amateur stuff. I was a full time university student, full time hunting/fishing rt time hack writer with ideas to break into the fetish trade. It was fun to do when I had tm,btatr171 I never had time for writing. Once I saw my efforts were not income generative I huke te hoe es o manuscripts, magazines, photos and all into the boxes and stuck them in a cose an fogotabot te wolething. None of that was criminal in nature. It was not seizable unde theterm of he wrran issed. ut tey seized it. They read it. Five weeks after the stuff was sized, they ome u withthis Greatst Crme? cap.
I?ve never tried to say I was a hotshot new talent. My basic bitch has been that I had a RIGHT to wever I pleased in my own home; that the police had no RIGHT to seize it absent a warrant staigte atdmy literary work; that the State had no RIGHT to use it in a murder trial absent som nxu btwenth iementered into evidence and the crime charged; and that newspapers and magazins hd n RIHT o qotefro mywriting and to say that I write fiendish stories, and therefore I ama ghulis, copse-ovin fied. Wen te Ghoul digs up a corpse to make love to it and its toes fal off, proseutorsall oer th Stat immeiatel eye the author as a villain.
Whether I?m talented is not in question. I can?t get talented unless I do a lot of practicing. Of cot of what was seized in 1973 was immature; how could it not be? Everybody goes through develpetlsae.
The uniqueness of this case is that I am not a fiend. FACT: The ?6 Dead, 28 May Be? stories hit the May, 1973. The exact same month Ted Bundy began his slaughter spree. Ted said he was influecdb eetv magazines. Guess who, kid? Sex and violence was Ted?s trigger, he said. How odd tha Iwa Td? prsna ?ero.? It was a strange relationship there. Weirdly enough, a lot of what I wotein y soris yarsbefre,Ted did! Ted?s Hero, and it was all a hoax. How could that be? Becaue I as blledas ?he Geatet? ad Te?s ego pushed him to be even greater? You see how such an unsual rue cincidnce cn be oven nto oe fanastic tale. Makes you wonder, did the State?s wild satemens abou me trgger of Bund?
A disturbed personality is always going to find something to lash along its madness. My personal senality follows what Jesus Christ said. In a nutshell: LOVE GOD. LOVE YOUR FELLOW MAN. I make nefr oLV that philosophy, which is why I cannot allow violent revenge to enter into my heartwih esec t tos wo put me here.

Powerline Road, Expecting Dinner, and Into the Mind of the Ghoul were written with intent to offend.gs should be issued with this book. Even so, I cannot be faulted on the accuracy of the detal h hu hracter is perfectly insane; the condition of the bodies is perfectly accurate and ifth radr snt hoke and chilled by the mindless horror that defies understanding, then I need t tun i mypen Thse ale cu along the edge of reveling in murder and perversion. I?m not going o sa: Oh tha stuf isjusttwadle ad nasty and you can?t print it. I?m not a phony. I wrote serous fckingmania stores. Iwas cncernd wit making the stuff gross and nasty and crazy. I worke hard t it. t?s vaid proe. Andit?s nn-crimnal.
With Into the Mind of the Ghoul we have the first stirrings of the maniac?s tortured mind. Then in PRoad the fantasy slips into reality. The Ghoul is patently crazy in his actions but his reflcin r ary lucid. You will never know the long hours I put into the Ghoul stories. The ironicpat s ha watth plice stole from me might be termed working drafts. Murder Plan is skeletal, bae srucureon hic tofleh out a yarn. It annoyed me that this was published when it was not nywhre nar were waned i to e. Pwerline Road and Expecting Dinner were much further along, bt deat wit the mplemntatin of he inane cmpulsions manifested through sex and violence. It?s he oldcase o the Itellec preseting te probem to he Will and the Will says, let?s run with itor let? drop i. But te Ghoulis all ull of hort cicuits i his psyche. He goes directly from gouling aound to uncheon n the copse?s moey. Instad of loing his unch, he buys his lunch. Becuse, of curse, he s OUT to unch!
If I didn?t have the emotional capacity to chuckle at all this I?d have been totally a basket case bjust roll with it. MASS MURDERER! You bet. Best in the business . . . and let me tell you ho tsdn.M tories have been well researched for realism: I have watched people die from gunshot and stabbinvaios other means when I worked Emergency Room Security at Broward Medical Center. I?ve seenpol agd (uicdes), smashed in car wrecks, having heart attacks, blasted by shotgun.
The research about how people rot I got from mortician texts and homicide investigation texts. The mcience texts are particularly good, because they go into the chemistry of putrefaction. You e nhu-yhur discourse on how a corpse decays into a puddle of slime. I used that textbook matril orth prtabutthe girl in the canal and the disinterment of the girl in the hole. The toesrotingoff Clssi toch.If ou want to be a good horror writer you need to have a command of thee thngs. You an?tjustsit own ne dy and write a convincing horror tale without doing some exhastivereseach, ad I?msure tephe Kingwill ell you the same thing. Squash the baby, flatten thecat, hng thewhore nd wath her ot.
Anyone who says ?This is the most disgusting thing I?ve ever read? is paying me a compliment. I likeives, like MOST disgusting. What people hate about my stuff is the confrontation with their w otlt.Tese stories are designed to make you throw up and leave you looking over your shouldr ora on wil. s or those timid souls who read my work and hate it: GOOD! My intent is to geta vlidemoionl rspose.TheGhoul is a negative character; the reader is supposed to hate him an fea him He epreentsthe lackst dpths of the human heart that is twisted beyond comprehensionor reemptin. I on?t are i peope hat my wrk, so long as they understand that it is a PRODUCT.It?s nt ME. There s a quer chiling pwer tht runsthrough Expecting Dinner. I?m not talking great writing. Italkingraw fiedishnes ? heres a sexal psycopathic monster that will scare the wits out of yo.Te prose s actualy drab; he emotin, the mdness, te perversion ooze through it like a bloodyslme The purpse is to allow in he insaniy of the haracter, his homicidal delusions and sexualdysuncion. The Goul is ponerously sik throughot his entie being, ad the prose reflects that rab, morbd hopelessnss.
Where Payday snaps along, the Ghoul stories are written in a dirgelike style by comparison. Payday iy, yet it?s believable. The Ghoul stories raise gooseflesh ? not because of the clever prose u eas fattention to the horrible little details. Don?t you love the way I have the maniac felngsoryfo hs icims? What a twisted fucker he is! Ted Bundy in the Chi-O house with his clubevoes ERRR, ut y caraterevokes HORROR via his base depravity, incomprehensible vileness. Beleve e, pl, i?s nt eay tocaptre tat in a story. My character is scary because he is ordinary, but h is lving n a dmensin of nsaniy tha causes the reader to gasp in revulsion. Squashing akid wih a trck is ross, ut it appensevery ay in eal life. A homicidal sex pervert sticking hs toes p a dea girl?ssquishycunt isriding line o madnes that teeters on sick humor. It?s frghteningbut it cn be funy as wel.
It?s downbeat, it?s crawling out from under a wet rock and leaving a slimy trail . . . it?s . . . thThat work was done 20+ years ago, and since then I?ve progressed as a writer into other area.Imsilgo for a few more rounds with the Ghoul, though: Trick Baby Meets the Ghoul, The Ghoulan te ithhke, lie of Life/Slice of Death, Lavender Lips, Bagged by the Ghoul. (?Her mouth wa opn. laendr he ws o he lips, pink flecks of lipstick clung to the visible grey tongue. I wnderd ifI wold ctch ome eirddisese if I kissed the pretty corpse. I decided to find out and emove the ransprent lasti BROAWAY CEANER bag from her head.?)
If you read it superficially you get a turn-off because of the nastiness. But if you sit down and re it, there is the THROB, the underlying vibrancy of insanity. You?d like to dismiss these stre,cl hmjack-off fantasies for perverts. But then, upon reflection, you think this could be ea! ha?swht s ealy scary.
And that?s where the cops stop. They don?t compute that it?s scary because of the detail work. They it as a technical achievement of creative writing in the horror genre. They can?t see that tcmsaiefr the reader and evokes a reaction because it?s good writing. It?s really amazing an sragean usetig nd comforting too, in a way.
I once got thirty days in the Hole for submitting a story to a magazine. The editor was so upset he the prison demanding I be punished. I was too! Talk about HOT STUFF! It was a biker?s testimna.Rdhtsoking gospel from the mouth of a Scooter Tramp turned to Jesus. I wrote it as he tol i. op, urer sx erversion. All of it. I wrote my story true and for that I got the Box. Compimets f a edtorwhodid?t ike it. Everybody likes murder tales, but nobody likes the maggots u thenosepart Wel, I? lik to et te folks know that murder ain?t nice.
I?ve had prison officials SCREAM IN MY FACE that I?m a sick pervert for sending out my stories. Bad elf-esteem. But inside, deep down in the artist?s soul of me, the applause was ringing and teanucrwssaying ?Let?s have a hand for the MASTER FICTIONALIST who put an adult State Officia itoa cramngfi oer a STORY!?
When I was at the Police Academy I did a paper on the Harvey Glatman case. Glatman was a 1950?s seri who photographed women while they were dying. He?d use ligature strangulation and while the eecoigad in their death throes he?d be clicking away with a camera. My interest was in his aredmid.Cosier H was not insane. But what he was doing was madness, wasn?t it? Heirins was rmorefu afer slugher ing, Glatman was not. All this is worked into the Ghoul.
The melange of perverted psyches I used to shape my Ghoul character, while based on the Misfit, are reeding of various types. I relied heavily on three especially Ghoulish true cases: The FrenhSren nPris, Ed Gein and Bella Kiss. These three were corpse-fuckers. Fish was also a corpseeaer Te onusonan remorse I based on the Heirins case. He was the original Catch-Me Killer, wo wuldsnek i an stal ome?s clothes. It was an escalation of perversions that ended up with Hirin becminga seial ille. Bela Kss had over 20 women in his drums. Pickled in alcohol. Bundyvisitd therottig corses o the omen e kiled. He liked to tart them up with fresh makeup and nil polsh. Tht?s ghulism.Gives ou theinvolutary sivers ? if you can let yourself think about t.
The fascination with hanging is perversion more than crime, but well documented in older psychologicooks. Mainly it was that the person was ?imprinted? sexually by the spectacle of public hangns n h iion became a masturbation fantasy. Then he got ?locked into? the fantasy and it blocedreulr ex Ter?sno limit to the weirdness you run into in these books on abnormal sex imprining, s I umpd al tis n apot, and stirred up a real ding-dong of a homicidal maniac.
Insanity is hard to capture on paper. There has to be a THROB as the mind jumps off the trolley of ty into the abyss of madness. In Grand Theft, there is the throb of madness throughout it. Ti samlifceted tale, but the main theme is manipulation and greed. Murder, but not mindless mrdr.Th sar prtisthe normalcy of Ted. Suzie can discern that Ted is a guy who has a Special Qaliy. er rro isin he israding of the ?specialness? she sees. Her judgment is clouded by the ecesity f getingclea wit herown oot before inventory day.
If you knew the real answer to why the slut is murdered, you?d feel secure. As it stands you don?t ked kills her, which is designed to make you squirm. Not necessarily while reading the story, btltrwieyou?re sizing up some guy. Suddenly Grand Theft pops into your head. Ted has that gredmoiv, utits or than that. There?s that serial killer madness.
In many of my stories I weave murder into sex as a social perversion. I do murder as an expression oy, rage, and power. But I don?t do murder as a mystery in the classical sense. There is no ?hdnt set rather the focus is on the ?whydoit.? I dwell on the rapacious destruction of beaut, fatreofmude tat angers people. I gnaw away at areas where other writers are too timid to entre.Murer,as wrte t, s not a rational act.
In Cut Bait, the theme is homicidal insanity; it?s a horror story. It?s not supposed to make sense, es make your skin crawl. I?m not going to tell you if it?s a true story or not. I?d prefer t e o wa.
My recent experiences with reader reactions have been varied. Virtually all of the professional writ that the writing is excellently done, yet the stories themselves, while fascinating, also pooefa n evulsion. Most of my work deals with unspeakable associations, such as the relationsipbewen exan dat. Spring Break is such a tale. Is the protagonist insane? A good question. Ws Hrve Gltma inanewhe hehired women as ?bondage models? and then photographed them during thir dath hroe? Gltmanwas strngle. He?d come during the photography session. California execued hi, sayng hewas nt insne. Gatmanwas havily influenced by the art of Betty Page. It raisesan intrestin queston: Dos Bett Page osing n nothng but a rubber panty and a Calcraft Harnessbecome n accesory to urder b triggeing Glaman?s mdness? Ed Gein was heavily influenced by Ilse Koch?s unusual penchant for human skins. Miss Koch was tried nced to be hanged, but her sentence was later commuted. She was not considered insane, yet Gi a.
Early Release is a slam against the system that degrades people in the name of corrections. People tons are country clubs. The Starke Stories just give a hint of what it?s really like. I portrytesc, prerted individuals who staff them. Early Release is just a beginning. I do intend to rie or.
My Ticket is a satire on how I ribbed Bundy; Death House Screams is about the 1979 Spinkelink executhow the State violated Spink?s body when they packed him. ?Brutality? is a matter of opinion n h S din does try to make executions suitable for mixed company.
Payday is a fictionalized account of a real event. I stopped at the edge of the hole. In reality, Mi be stripped of clothes, jewelry and ID, and her HANDS cut off. Real pro hit men don?t worryaotteh h cops would run her prints if she were found. The ?no hands? would tip them to an oranze cim dalan se would be a ?Jane Doe? file forever.

I am not deluded. I?ve never said, Gee, I?m the new Papa Hemingway, I?m a budding Norman Mailer, Elmrd, whatever. I?m not. I?m G.J. Schaefer, Storyteller, Dabbler in the Art of Prose, and I eno itn pte rocks scattered over the meadow of our society and watching the creepy-crawlers inhuansknssctte iter and thither. I don?t have to live with anyone but myself ? and I like myslf ustfin.
I make decisions. They aren?t always right decisions, but nobody runs around calling me wishy-washy.e manipulative: An ex-cop survives in prison by being the slyest, motherfuckingest, most expr aiuao e can be. Bet yer ass I?m a manipulator, and mean, and stubborn . . . but also aboveavrael hnet, loalto a fault and true to my convictions. And I work like a FIEND. I?m a recalctrat bstad ad Im cazir tan a shithouse rat ? but not so one would notice. There?s a curious enseof feedo invlved Wha cantheydo to me? I?m buried as deep as they can bury me without actally illin me, o I cn wrie wha I wat forthe most part.
Killer Fiction creates a small wound in the area of the brain where social awareness is housed. It?s indictment in the guise of entertainment. I don?t expect it to change anything in the world u elgo about having written such a controversial piece of work.
It pleased me to to write these stories, and if you don?t like them, then don?t read them. I?ve said along and I still say that. My story is the same today as it was in 1973.
