"Paw Paw! Time to get up dear."

Paw Paw pulled the warm furry blankets over her head.

"Paw Paw! There is much work to be done."

Paw Paw finally managed to open her eyes and crawl out of bed.

Paw Paw, you see, is a small female squirrel about a year and a
half old. She lives with her mother and two brothers and three
sisters: Lyle, Jeremy, Sabrina, Hester, and Tillie. Today the
whole family was going to spend the day gathering nuts from the
forest. That way, when winter came, all the squirrels would be
warm and snug in their tree house, with plenty to eat.

Paw Paw slowly made her way to the breakfast room where her
brothers and sisters were eating ravenously.

"What took you so long Paw Paw?" they all chanted.

"There is no way you can gather as many nuts as we can!" they
taunted. Paw Paw looked down sulkily, then suddenly raised her
head and cried, "You just wait and see, you bullies!"

"There there," soothed Mother Squirrel. "It's not important
how many nuts you each gather. Now, I am going to go to town
and visit your Aunt. You all run along and start gathering
nuts. And take care of your little sister."

In single file, each squirrel marched out the door and took a
basket handed to them by Mother. The last one out the door was
Paw Paw. She took the basket and looked up at Mother with
little sad eyes.

"Run along and be a good sport, Paw Paw," whispered Mother,
giving her a peck on the forehead. So off they went.

Soon they reached the middle of the forest where all the nuts
were hidden in the trees. Suddenly, all of Paw Paw's brothers
and sisters began racing up and down the trees, greedily filling
their baskets with fresh nuts. Paw Paw just stood there feeling
left out. Then, out of the blue, a glimmer of a bright, but
soft light caught her eye. She looked up and to her surprise,
there was a huge nut hanging from a limb in the tree above. The
nut was as big as a pine cone and very rosy!

"If I could get that nut, I would show all my brothers and
sisters," thought Paw Paw.

With that in mind she began to climb the huge tree and slowly
made her way up towards the giant nut. She was eye level with
it, but now she had to climb out onto the treacherous limb from
which it was hanging. A glance at the progress her brothers and
sisters were making helped her swallow her fear and crawl out
onto the teetering branch.

After what seemed like hours to Paw Paw, she made it to the end
of the branch. Carefully balancing herself, she wrapped both of
her little paws around the tremendous nut and tugged with all
her strength. The nut simply would not budge. Fortunately, her
brothers and sisters were too busy to notice what she was doing,
for they probably would have made fun of her.

After much ado, Paw Paw could still not loosen the nut from its
branch. Sadly, she climbed down the tree, completely dejected.

"What a pity," she exclaimed. "Now I do not have any nuts!"

Paw Paw slowly walked over to where she had set her basket
down. Suddenly, she heard a large thud. Paw Paw turned around.
To her delight, the giant rosy nut rested in front of her on
the forest's dry floor. Jumping gleefully, she pounced upon it
and put it inside her basket. All of her brothers and sisters
stared at her in awe. They would could not believe that their
little sister had found such a large and beautiful nut.

That night when the squirrels arrived home, Paw Paw's brothers
and sisters treated her as one of them. Mother was very happy
that her children were getting along better. They all decided
to put the giant nut on the mantle above the fireplace, where it
could be seen by all, never to be eaten until the big holiday in
the middle of winter when snow covered all the ground.
