Chasing U2
Boxed Larry Mullen and "the Edge"
Evans; drummer and guitarist respectively of Ireland's U2 in
their hotel suite recently and managed to obtained a few comments
about their success, and of course, their music.
It's around 3 o'clock in the afternoon and the talents are
hungry. A quick call to the hotel's room service unit results in
breakfast. "Should I sign for it or should you?" queries Mullen.
"We tried, right from the beginning of the band, to avoid any
boxes" he recollects.
"I would never want to label the band" adds Evans "I never
really thought about what kind of band we were. We're a three
piece band (with a vocalist).
We use bass, drums and guitar; the three primary colors. We
approach it in that type of way because each instrument is
individual. Each instrument has its own importance."
"Our lyrics work well within the context of the song. You can
get atmosphere from the song though you may not be able to pick
out every word. It's important to us that there's a freedom that
people can read into a song rather than having to accept what
it's really all about."
And isn't that what music is about...personal
interpretation?
