ALBUM REVIEW

I'm going to try a change in the format of the Album
Review section. Instead of doing one long, wordy review, I'm
going to do one current L.P. and one classic L.P. This will make
it easier for you to get something useful out of them, and I hope
it might spur you to write a short critique to post here. Plus, I
can't afford to buy a new album every week!!

CURRENT ALBUM

KIM MITCHELL BAND

I AM A WILD PARTY
=====================
For Kim Mitchell fans, this is what we've been waiting
for all along!!! A true quality recording of him playing live. It
features mostly material from "Shaking Like A Human Being" and
"Wonderland". Let me say first, it's really a guitar album. Kim
is ripping and tearing into the heavy stuff, and playing with
precision and taste in the lighter tunes. "Battlescar", "Rock And
Roll Duty", "Lager And Ale" all are played with a toughness that
demonstrates what Mitchell does best. Wailing!!!
Peter Fredette plays Bass on the whole thing. His high
harmonies and answering melodies are almost flawless. "All We
Are", a slow dreamy love song that trades verses between him and
Kim, is captivating. He's come a long way since paying his dues
in Ottawa bar bands.
The title track, "I Am A Wild Party", is almost a
archetypical "Max Webster" tune. The carnival atmosphere of the
chorus and the crowd chants combine with a power chord verse, to
define what is unique about Kim Mitchell.
Sounds great, plays great, the tunes are great! To me,
Mitchell represents Canadian rock for what it is. A bunch of
hosers just having a good time. But, he is good enough that he
elevates his fans into a place where they share a comradarie with
each other. If you've ever been to one of his concerts, you'll
know what I mean.
Just one more thing. Keep it under you're hat, but the
most of the album was recorded in a sound stage!!! Not live in
concert, but recorded off the floor from a huge warehouse sized
room. Also, the drummer from the band "Loverboy", Matt Frennette,
has joined the band. Apparently, there was some attitude problems
with the drummer that played on the album.
Good release..I'll give it eight, out of ten!!!

CLASSIC ALBUM

MONTROSE

This album is the first solo release by guitarist,
"Ronnie Montrose". For those who have never heard it, it's tough
to relate to the true importance of his work. He used the heavy
guitar as a melody instrument. Actually, he used the sound of a
Les Paul and a Marshall!!! The sound he got out of his guitar,
snarly and mean, still eludes modern equipment.
Sammy Hagar sings like it matters on this album. I'd
say it's comparable to the best "Van Halen" vocals he's done. His
range is higher now, but he has more of a growl on "Montrose".
The production is excellent for late seventies...
"Bad Mooter Scooter" starts with a whammy-bar
duplication of a motorcycle revving, and breaks into a swaggering
verse. "Rock The Nation" is a catchy, high speed rocker. "Rock
Candy" and "Make It Last" are both bone crunching, almost lazy
tunes. Super heavy guitar riffs and thundering drums.
"Good Rocking Tonight" hints on a shuffle, but breaks
wide open. "Space Station # 5" is dreamlike in places, and down-
right kick-ass in others...
