I remember seeing Jeff Healey in a small dingy bar called
the Upper Lip many times in 75-76. He used to come to a Sunday
Jam Session there that was hosted by Tony Springer. ( A great
friend and a supreme guitar player. ) Jeff used to bring his red
Strat down there and get up and play. We all knew he was good,
but he was a little shy, and of course seemed a tad nervous.
Tony kind of took Jeff under his wing, ( Little Wing ), and
through whatever circumstances evolved, Jeff became literally one
of the best guitar players in the whole God damned world. And
people still think that rock and roll isn't happening in T.O.
The Jeff Healey Band went on to sign the most lucrative
record deal ever signed by a new Canadian artist. A ten album
deal. Yup, a stateside ten LP deal.
The rest is becoming history as we speak. Without putting
to much of a burden on Jeff, it's probably safe to say that he is
putting Toronto on the international rock and roll map. The
critics love him all over the world, especially in Britain and
Europe.
He has re-written the textbook on how to play guitar, and
his youth, his enthusiasm, his humility and of course his playing
has served us all proudly. All this from a guy who plays his
guitar on his lap, is blind and is only 24 years old.
Mark Knopfler, George Harrison and Paul Shaffer all appear
on his latest release, "Hell To Pay". Healy and Harrison play a
version of"While My Guitar Gently Weeps", with Harrison singing.
Sass Jordan also steps in for a couple of tunes. "
Full Circle" and "Highway of Dreams" are two other tunes
that can't miss.
Give it a listen, Don't even buy it, tape it. Jeff won't
miss the one dollar per LP royalty.
A ten album deal. Of course..

This week, I'm going to go back to my roots.
The album this week is King Crimson
In The Court of the Crimson King
A lot of you will recognize this LP. For those of you that
don't, you should listen to this album.
It was released in 1969.
Greg Lake from Emerson, Lake and Palmer.
Robert Fripp, later of David Bowie fame.
Ian McDonald on reeds and vibes.
Michael Giles on drums.
and Peter Sinfield with lyrics.
In it's time it was a truly innovative and daring musical
venture. The songs are moody and sometimes disturbing. It truly
represents an era when musical integrity was the yard stick that
measured the popularity of a band.
-21st Century Schizoid Man..
The futuristic theme and bizarre guitar riffs still
make it a heavy metal classic. How could saxophone meet nutso
guitar and mate? Well, see for yourself.
-I Talk to the Wind..
Beautiful song. Evokes emotions of nostalgia even if
you had never heard it before.
-Epitaph..
A lesson in Mellotron..
-Moonchild..
Classy jazz oriented piece. Wondrous vibe scat.
A tune you'd want to have on a desert island.
-The Court of the Crimson King..
A classic, classic 70's tune. Sums it all up.
Pompous, Eerie, Psychedelic, Grandiose.
Combines the styles of each of the players into a
epic work. Unequalled for the era.
