ESTROGEN

Over the next 20 years, as the boomers hit mid-life, 40 to 50
million women will pass through menopause.

In the Western World, the median age of menopause is 50.8 years,
but estrogen depletion often begins much earlier. And an
increasing number of women are showing menopausal symptoms are
in their mid- and even early 40s.

Eight out of 100 women go through menopause before 40.

Estrogen is involved in some 300 bodily processes, so its
depletion can turn the body topsy-turvy. The constellation of
withdrawal symptoms include, besides the ubiquitous hot flashes,
loss in bone density, loss of concentration, sleep disruption,
mood orbits, heart disease and allergies.

Estrogen in stored in fat cells. Heftier women may have an
easier time going through menopause since their bodies have more
stored estrogen to draw on as hormone production slows. From
pre-menopause to post-menopause, estrogen levels drop about
12-fold.

Soy is a source of estrogen. In Japan, women reported virtually
no hot flashes. Their bloodstreams showed high levels of soy
and calcium.
