I had gone up to visit one of my stoner buddies for a weekend when I first tried Salvia. It was late at night and my buddy asked me, spur of the moment, if I wanted to try it. Hell, I?m always up for trying new things, so I said sure. We had smoked a fair amount of weed, and quite possibly the effects of Salvia were slightly influenced by that. Nevertheless, we packed a bowl (half leaves, half extract - although my memory is fucked) and lit up. She instructed me how to properly take a hit of Salvia, and I followed carefully. Before I had a chance to hand her the pipe after I was done my hoot, I began to feel the effects.

It was as if suddenly I had been swept into horrible, horrible danger. I was in a different world, and the fact that I?d just taken a hit of Salvia meant nothing to me - it was real. Fractals shot out from everywhere and everything, plummeting towards me at great speeds in colours of red, orange, and yellow. I didn?t know what was happening to me; I was tripping bad. I felt like I was stumbling around, muttering meaningless things to my friend who was looking at me like I was nuts. I couldn?t see past the fractals - it was as if they were the things I was looking at - everything became the fractals, shooting towards me like lightning.

And then, as if nothing else could get worse, a vortex opened somewhere to my right and, with its sucking power, began to pull me into it. I felt the entire right side of me - arm, leg, face - being pulled into this vortex, and I fought desperately to avoid such a tragedy. Brandine, my buddy, was talking to me - what she was saying I could not understand, so I tried to utter some jibberish back to her but I couldn?t; the vortex had gotten a hold of my lips and was pulling them away from my face, and I was unable to properly form a word. And then, out from all the fractals came a hand with a silver machine in its hand, outstretched before me. I looked beyond the fractals and somewhere saw Brandine; then I realized she was handing me her cell phone. I looked at her curiously, wanting an explanation, then I realized there was someone on the phone who wanted to talk to me. Now, if you?ve ever done Salvia before, you?ll know that this is the worst thing that could ever happen to somebody on Salvia. I had no fucking clue who it could be, and I was terrified to find out. But eventually I took the small silver cell phone from her hand and put it to my face.

All I heard was a muffled voice, muttering something about somebody named Anthony and if I knew where he was. I didn?t know any Anthony, so I stuttered, ?No, I . . . I don?t know where he is.?

"Okay, I'll call back later."

"Mhm," I mumble and thrust the phone back to Brandine.

The phone conversation had left me shaken and confused. I tried to explain to Brandine what had just happened, but I still could not talk properly, though the vortex was long gone; I just couldn?t find the words to describe was I was feeling. Besides, I was busy concentrating on the fractal world before me. Brandine told me she was going to change into her pajamas, so I mumbled to her that I?d be in the living room.

Somehow, I found my way to the living room where I bathed under a glorious fan that cooled me and sobered me up. Soon, the high faded into a mellow state of being. And I was thankful to return to reality.

I decided to give Salvia another shot the next night, after hearing that Brandine didn?t trip at all. I figured I?d see if I could achieve a similarly fucked-up trip again. I took a smaller hoot this time by accident, but yet again I was plummeted into a different world. Suddenly everything turned to liquid before me. I was sitting on an air mattress at the time with a few blankets spread out before me; what I saw was a body of water lapping crazily at my feet. But the water wasn?t lapping like you?d normally think water would lap; it was as if the liquid mass before me had been sectioned into dozens of pedal-like formations that worked, indeed, just like a pedal - up and down, up and down. Spreading the liquid to the next pedal and so forth. I was terrified by this reality, and so I struggled to lean back against something so I could take it all in and not fall over. My second trip seemed like some kind of salamander-like waterworld, with psychedelic colours and patterns and a total alternative reality.

Once I sobered up from my second Salvia trip, Brandine asked me what had happened to me this time, as she and others had found my first trip fascinating. I explained to her to the best extent I could, realizing that the watermelon-like liquid I had seen had been from a quilted blanket that had green trim and red triangles within, which, in a crazy way, could resemble watermelons. I don?t know where I got the salamander idea from - perhaps it was the perfect texture of the liquid - the slow, lapping motions - that reminded me of the slow, languid motions of a salamander.

You can read about other wicked trips I've had on mushrooms and otherwise at my website. I think the link is posted somewhere around here...
