WARNING

Never, ever, ever, ever, ever use Coricidin Cough And Cold. Many, many lives have been lost due to using it.

Chapter 1: What is DXM?

DXM is short for Dextromethorphan. It is a common cough suppressant, found in many cough syrups. In large doses it acts as a disassociative drug.

Chapter 2: What are the effects of DXM?

DXM is what's known as a disasociative. This means that it disassociates your mind from your body, and the rest of your physical setting. Some positive effects of DXM are: euphoria (becoming incredibly happy and content); creative, dreamlike experiences, forgiveness and warm feelings towards others; hallucinations (In very high doses); skin and touch sensations similar to MDMA ("ecstasy"); and confusion and disorientation.

DXM also has it's negative effects. Some one them include: Sexual dysfunction (Difficulty becoming erect, or achieving orgasm); Stiff, robotic, robot-like walking, known as the "Robo-Walk" (Usually, after the first few times, DXM users learn to control the "Robo-Walk", and start to walk normally); Upset Stomach and Vomiting (Usually right after drinking cough syrup. DXM users report that when they rinse their mouths out, and drink water, the nausea quickly passes); Diarrhea (Diarrhea usually ends BEFORE the trip starts, leaving DXM users diarrhea-free for their trip); fast heartbeat; and becoming very hot and dehydrated (DXM users report that when they keep 2 bottles of cold water on hand, they feel fine.).

Chapter 3: So, I just have to drink cough syrup?

Yes, and no. See, many cough syrups contain things OTHER than Dextromethorphan. These other ingredients can, and will, make you VERY sick. When searching for a cough syrup to use, DXM users should check the "Active Ingredients" section of the label, and make sure that the ONLY, ONLY, ONLY ingredient is "Dextromethorphan HBr", or "DXM HBr", or "Dextromethorphan Hydrobromide", or something similar. THERE SHOULD ONLY BE ONE INGREDIENT!!!!! I cannot stress this enough. Another ingredient that is ok is "Dextromethorphan Polystirex". This is found in Delsym brand cough syrup. This is a very DIFFERENT and POWERFUL variant of DXM. IT IS NOT RECCOMENDED!

Chapter 4: OK, so, what cough syrups are OK to use?

The following cough syrups contain only DXM, also included are the amount of DXM they contain (in mg's), per Teaspoonful (1 Teaspoon = 5ml) (NOTE: Do not confuse ml's with mg's. mg stands for Milligram. ml stands for milliliter. DXM is measured in mg's, since it is a powder, and therefore it is a solid. Liquid cough syrup is measured in ml's, since it is liquid):

Robitussin Maximum Strength Cough - 15mg of DXM HBr per 5ml of syrup (NOTE: This is the most commonly used cough syrup among DXM users)

Robitussin Honey Cough Formula - 10mg of DXM HBr per 5ml of syrup (NOTE: This syrup is reported to taste horrible)

Vicks 44 Cough Relief - 10mg of DXM HBr per 5ml of syrup (NOTE: This syrup is VERY thick, and, according to one DXM user, it "feels like a bad tasting slug, slowly dripping down your throat")

Delsym 12-hour Cough Relief - 15 mg of DXM Polystirex per 5ml of syrup (NOTE: This is about equal to 30 mgs of DXM HBr) (NOTE: DXM Polystirex is much different than DXM HBr. Avoid it.)

CVS Tussin Maximum Strength Cough - 15mg of DXM HBr per 5ml of syrup

Life Clear Cough Syrup DM - 15mg of DXM HBr per 5ml of syrup (NOTE: This syrup has a very good taste, almost like grape juice. It is not sold in the United States. It is only sold in Canada.)

Buckley's Mixture - 12.5mg of DXM HBr per 5ml of syrup (NOTE: This is the worst tasting cough syrup ever. It is not sold in the United States. It is only sold in Canada.)

For pictures of these syrups, and many others, visit http://www.third-plateau.org/medicines/

Cough Syrup isn't the only source of DXM. It is also sold in Gelcaps, or Sucrets. Taking these are different from taking cough syrup, and will not be covered in this article.

Chapter 5: How much DXM is used to achieve a "high"?

For a first time user, about 150mg of DXM is sufficient. This is a low dose, and will give the user a light trip.

An "average" dose is around 400mg.

For a strong trip, about 700mg should be taken.

When taking amounts over 1 gram (1000mg), users have reported VERY different, VERY strong experiances. Do not jump to this level. Work your way up VERY slowly and gradually.

Never go beyond 1.5 grams (1500mg).

Chapter 6: OK, how do I measure this out?

Measuring out the amount of cough syrup to drink, to get the right amount of DXM is easy.

Let's use Robotussin Maximum Strength Cough Syrup as an example. It contains 15mg of DXM HBr per 5ml of syrup. If somebody wanted to take 300mg of DXM HBr, this is how they would measure it out.

There are 15mg of DXM HBr per 5ml of syrup. Therefore, there are 3mg of DXM HBr per 1ml of syrup.

To get 300mg of DXM HBr they would just have to drink 100 ml of syrup.

The following mathematical equation can be used when figuring out how much syrup to drink:

X = The amount of DXM HBr per 5ml of syrup, in mg's. (In the above example, X would = 15)

Y= The amount of DXM HBr you want, in mg's. (In the above example, Y would = 300)

(NOTE: The / symbol means "divided by")

(A/5)/Y = Amount Of Syrup to drink in ml's.

So, if you wanted 300ml of syrup, and had a 354ml bottle, you would drink ALMOST the whole bottle (More specifically, you would drink about 6/7th of the bottle). You don't have to be exact, so don't fret over drinking EXACTLY the right amount. Just estimate about how much.

Chapter 7: A quick note on Olney's Lesions

A side effect of frequent DXM use is Olney's Lesions. Olney's Lesions are small "potholes" in your brain. To avoid Olney's Lesions, DXM should be used no more frequently than once every 2 weeks. Still, this does not make the risk disappear. Be responsible. More, extremely detailed information can be found at http://www.third-plateau.org/dangers/olney.txt .
