Some of the side effects you describe in your article, attributed to MPTP, can be obtained with high doses of Meperidine (Pethidine in Aust).
I have been an IV drug user, of opioids, for the past 15 years. I have been on methadone 180mg daily for the past 11 years. If you administer Pethidine, intravenously, in excess of 1000mg you get hallucinations, tachycardia and severe orthostatic hypotension.
My usual drug binge takes on the following style daily.
I take 2500mg of chlorpromazine. 50mg of clonazepam or flunitrazepam followed by either 1000mg of pethidine, 1000mg of diacetyl morphine, 3500mg of morphine sulphate, 200mg dextromoramide, 2mg of fentanyl citrate or 10mg of phenoperidine. Sometimes I will substitute the clonazepam and chlorpromazine with massive doses of phenobarbitone, amylobarbitone or pentobarbitone. Tacrine MUST be taken with the fentanyl due to the severe respiratory depression and sometime benztropine is needed to stop the muscle rigidity.
I have just been released from prison after serving 5 years for armed robbery. I used to rob pharmacies at gun point. Such is the desire for narcotic analgesics.
By the way, I am also an anaesthesiologist and have a degree in psychology.
I don't know if this is of any interest to you. I just thought it would go a long way to show how much tolerance can be built up on these drugs.
Thank you.
