Introduction

Car shopping is the act of entering a car, whose owner you don't know, and taking various items you need or are of possible value.

Techniques

There are various techniques for gaining entry to car. A few files that cover techniques of gaining entry to cars are:

Auto theft - including tools, prices, and where to

The art of lockpicking

How to Break Into Cars

Getting into locked cars

Also, you may want to just break the window open and open the car from the inside.

Materials

Tools for entry (Tools will vary as you may have different techniques for entering the vehicle, the needed items should be covered in files you have read)

  • Flashlight (varies)
  • Car (varies)
  • Gloves (varies)

Dar blue clothing (So as to blend in with the natural color of the night rather than a silhouette against it)

Storage

If you have a car, I suggest that you park it and work away from where your vehicle is. Carry a bag to keep your items in and take them back to your car. If you don't have a car, a storage location will be of help as you don't know how many/how big your items will be. A good place to put your items while waiting would be in a dumpster that you know won't be emptied anytime soon. If a friend lives nearby, work out a location to store a few bags of items in the person's yard, garage, or inside their house. Don't take your items to a storage location all at one time. Place them in bags and take them in shifts to your storage location. Incase you have to run, you don't want to get caught with a lot of bags over your shoulders. Suggested bags would be the giant brown Hefty outdoor trash bags with one inside the other. Also, a few large duffel bags would work.

Procedure

Selecting your technique for entry will be your first task. Second, you will want to pick out your targeted automobile. I would suggest finding a car with no alarm as this eliminates another step to slow you down in bypassing the alarm. Once you have selected a car with no alarm, check the handle. You never know when someone forgot to lock their door in a hurry to the office. If the door is not unlocked, use your selected technique of entry to get inside. Once inside, look for obvious things sitting out like electronics someone has just bought, pagers and cell phones clipped to the sun visor, and items in the passenger seat. Next, check under all the seats. This is one basic anti theft tactic done by many people. They simply put an item of value under their seat and hope that the casual car theft will pass their car thinking there is nothing of value inside. Next, check the glove compartment. Usually you will find car manuals, napkins, and parking tickets. You may find guns, car stereo faceplates, cell phones, calling cards, sunglasses, or drugs. Also check the sun visors. When people drive get their mail before leaving, they may put their paycheck in the top of their visors for cashing later. Also, you may find receipts from recent purchases that may be used for a return scam. Some people keep trashcans in their car, usually in the back, so check there. You may find receipts there as well. Remember to check the ignition, someone may have left the keys there in a hurry to their office as well. Once you have your items, and your bag isn't full, put them in your bag and move to another car. When your bag is full, take it to your car or storage location and go back to work on more cars.

Basic Tips and Notes

When picking your technique for entry, make sure that it uses tools that can be easily placed in your pockets, in the back of your pants, or concealed up a sleeve.

When picking your area, large parking lots are ideal as well as streets that have cars parked bumper to bumper all the way down the street. However, there might be more of a chance of someone coming out to their car if there are more cars around so be wary of people before you go in.

If, for some reason you decide to work during the day, try to go when the selected area is quiet. Look out for joggers, speed walkers, and grumpy elderly people. If you are working at night, remember the suggested attire and be wary of cops out for night shifts. They are usually more alert and looking for "a good story".

Working with friends is good for when you are just going to sell the items you find. You can work down one side of the street while your friend works down the other. This may lead to confusion if one of you sees a cop coming and the other doesn't but plans can be made for any given situation.

When you have all your items, sort through them for what you want to keep. I suggest selling the rest. You get money and it's another step in linking the item back to you if suspected of theft.

Always have an escape plan. Wear gloves to make this easier. Just drop everything except your tools, if possible, and put your escape plan into action. A few receipts and pagers isn't worth doing time. Remember, be safe and be cautious. Take all possible situations into consideration.
