Here's detailed description of how to do it:

Materials:

  • A computer
  • A printer
  • An envelope
  • A stamp

First of all, this scam can be done by ANYONE.

Step ONE: You need to find a company that you want to target and the specific product that you want to “complain” about.

For example:

Lays Incorporated <- company

Lays: classic chips <- specific product

When your done with that you choose between Checks (companies don’t send cash) You usually choose checks if you are a poor college student like me who needs money for food because their parents neglect them

For example: This is true, last week my friend Mike Lo scammed Ferreo Rochers or whatever they’re called and that candy shop sent him a check for the amount of $548.28 with a page long apology for giving him a “week long stomach-ache which resulted in a bill from the hospital of $530 dollars without insurance” the eighteen bux and twenty eight cents was the cost of a 32 size box bought from Costco.

or

FREE Coupons (when you get your coupons be sure to share it with us) Choose this if you’re a teenager who’s parents hasn’t opened a checking account for them.

For example: Companies usually give you a FREE coupon for the product you selected. About two months ago, I got 5 FREE coupons for Kraft Cream Cheese.

When you're done choosing and selecting, it’s time to write the letter

STEP TWO: you must be professional about everything, and everything you say has to stay consistent. Your complaint can be on how you found a fake fingernail in the chips ahoy bag or your whole family got sick after eating popcorn or candy or whatever your target was.

Here’s two links from Dizzie’s section that provides helpful hints for Complaint Letters:

http://www.howtocomplain.com/info/cl-template.shtml,

http://www.pueblo.gsa.gov/crh/caw_afterubuy_letter.htm

notice that these are sites with legal complaints so don’t worry about the receipt most companies are dumb enough to give you money and coupons without it.

STEP THREE: Print the complaint and be sure to sign your name.

STEP FOUR: Get some kind of soft cardboard that can be printed on. For example: You’re dad’s business card. Or you can rip off the cardboard part of old spiral notebooks.

STEP FIVE: Download a barcode creator software, this is my favorite” PG Barcode 1.0

Cost: none, freeware

Size: 32.1k

STEP SIX (not needed only if you’re going for BIG bucks, teenagers can skip this part): Go find your target product in a store, Costco or Price Club if you’re aiming for checks or a drugstore if you’re aiming for coupons.

Find your product and copy down its barcode number its usually right underneath the barcode. Enter the barcode number into the creator and select if it is

  • Code 3 of 9: Code 3 of 9 is an alphanumeric barcode that can encode numbers, upper case
  • Code 128: Code 128 supports full ASCII character encoding which means everything on your keyboard that you can type.
  • Code 2 of 5: Code 2 of 5 is a numeric-only barcode that has been in use for a long time.

STEP SEVEN: Fold the letter business-style (ask your dad about this) and put everything in the envelope.

STEP EIGHT: Wait. And within a week you should get either a check with an apology or coupons.
