Introduction

Lock picking is basically recreating the function of a key to open a locking device. In this guide I will discuss how to use lock picks to manipulate a standard cylinder lock.

Cylinder Locks

The standard cylinder lock has a row of five pins followed by a plug that turns a cam releasing a lock. Each pin is in an individual shaft that binds the shaft from turning. When a key is inserted, the pins are raised above the line of the shaft and it is able to turn and release the bind of the lock.

Tools

To pick the standard pin tumbler lock you need two tools.

  • A tension wrench
  • A pick

You can either buy these tools or make them yourself. Making them by using household items is what I will discuss.

Tension Wrench

A tension wrench is the first tool inserted into the lock. It is shaped usually like a seven. This gives your picking hand room to move about and not bump into your wrench hand. This also makes it easier for you to apply tension to the cylinder of a lock. A basic tension wrench should look like this:

D
L
E

A very thin screw driver, bent on the end, can be used as a tension wrench.. I suggest having the tip at an angle to keep your hands from bumping into each other but this is a personal preference.

Pick

The standard hook pick is the tool inserted second, over the tension wrench. The pick should be a long thin tool with a hook at the end, A basic pick should look like this:

H
A
N
D
L
E

The ends of hook picks vary in design. Basically it needs to be long, thin, and have a tip that points upward and can slide in the be raised up and slide back out. One could be made using a safety pin, hairpin, or other assorted thin metal objects.

Procedure

To open the lock, first insert your tension wrench. Next you insert the pick all the way into the cylinder until you hit the back. When you put the pick in you should twist the wrench a bit to press the shaft against the pins and make the edge that the pins will rest on. Now raise the pick up to scrape the top of the cylinder and drag it to the first pin. Shift the pick up and twist it side to side to raise the pin up and out of the cylinder and it will rest on the edge you made by turning the cylinder with the tension wrench. You will know that the pin is released when you feel a small vibration and hear a light clicking noise. Next, move to the second pin and repeat the raise and twist maneuver. Repeat until you are at the fifth pin. Once the fifth pin has been raised, and all others are past the break point, you can turn the cylinder all the way around using the tension wrench and the pick.

Notes

When you work, I suggest that you work in silence so that you can hear the pins sliding out of the cylinder and onto the ledge. Also, the click will be very slight and you will need to hold your tension wrench steady as possible. Acquiring a gentle touch is beneficial to feeling the pines releasing past the break point.
