Fireworks are very interesting but are illegal in many states. Lots of people claim they have M-80s and that they blow them off all of the time. Some even go as far as saying that an M-80 has the power of a 1/4 stick of TNT.

First off, M-80s have been illegal for the past 37 years because little kids got injured by the M-80s "immense power". Many mothers groups went wild over these "child-killers". The overprotective mothers went to the courts and made sure that all M-80, Cherry Bombs, and Blockbusters were outlawed in the states.

When some one says that they have M-80s they are most likely lying. Selling or even owning M-80s and other such salutes can land you in jail. They are not legal any where (even Indiana). The only way you can get and M-80 is through a black market dealer or make one.

Lots of people say that an M-80 has the power of a 1/4 stick of TNT. Thats a lie. A stick of TNT is not a measurement. M-80s are relatively weak compared to TNT in any amount. M-80s contain flash powder while TNT is made with Nitroglycerin. It’s like comparing apples to oranges.

What defines an M-80?

An M-80 is just a name that originated from military noisemakers. They were used in training simulators to simulate gunfire. When a firework is called an M-80 it is almost always a home rolled tube with 3-20 grams of flash powder in it. The fuse is some times sticking out the top but almost always out the side.

What is Flash Powder?

Flash powder is a low explosive that when lit emits a large flash of light and a cloud of smoke. In large amounts (30 plus grams) it will emit a very loud noise even when uncontained. The physical make up of Flash Powder is an oxidizer and a powdered metal. The oxidizer gives oxygen to the powdered metal, which acts like a fuel. It burns extremely fast so watch out.
